Kendall Jenner's Backlash Over Cultural Appropriation- Zion Melaku

The Kardashian- Jenner clan has dealt with cultural appropriation backlash for years. Just recently, Kendall Jenner, a model and TV personality, did a Vogue photo shoot where she sported a curly Afro look. For many, the question is, "Why did Vogue put Kendall Jenner in an Afro instead of hiring a black model?" I too have this question. As a member of the black community, I feel threatened and used when the white race continues to capitalize off of black culture. When a black individual wears or does something, it is deemed "ghetto" but as soon as a white individual does it, it's "hip" and "chic". White people in America have used black people and our culture to their advantage since slavery and this cycle needs to STOP!

  1. wow! this is crazy. I know I'm not apart of the black community and can't put myself in that position but, I can see your point and I think its something that does need to change. Its sad that vogue can't even notice it, I also think that you girls in the black community should be noticed more.

    1. I agree with you. Vogue's actions were unnecessary and diminished the opportunities for many talented African American models, taking away their chance to be in the lime light.

  2. I feel like this was a publicity stunt to get more attention, because to me it didn't really even look like an afro, i mean yea if thats what they were going for i agree, but to me it was just one of those weird model looks.

    1. I agree. Since she is Kendall Jenner, she will promote the company and more people will see Vogue's campaign. They probably used her to have a bigger audience and gain popularity. I do not understand why they felt the need to put her in an afro. With Jenner having such an influence on others, this can spread the idea that cultural appropriation is ok which is not right and should be stop. Lily Philips

  3. This is so strange to me that they put her in an afro look-especially since she is in fact white. I can imagine how offensive this is to people of the black community. I agree with you, why couldn't they have just hired a black model? Also this is weird coming from Kendall Jenner because she is an advocate for everyone being equal. strange.

  4. Kendall Jenner has traditionally advocated for equality, but I feel like her recent action make it less clear what her intentions are. She wants everyone to have equal opportunities, yet she takes away oppourtunities from black women by posing in an afro. I will be interested to see how she responds.
