India decriminalizes same sex relations-Zander Pryor

In the fight for civil rights, a historic decision was reached. India has announced that intercourse between anyone other than a man and a woman will be decriminalize. In other words, it's no longer illegal for gay partners to be intimate with each other. A bit surprisingly, up until this,  intimacy between queer couples was a legitimate crime. The judges were persuaded by the idea that freedom cannot exist if not extended to all.

This article, unsurprisingly makes me quite happy. While not directly affecting me, these people are my community, my brothers and sisters and I'm proud of the countless years and even lifetimes it took for this decision to be reached. I only wish that it had occurred sooner. We can only imagine how many would have benefited from this law. This reminds me of the repealing of don't ask, don't tell. This may seem an odd choice when compared with things like the legalization of same sex marriage but both force the citizens to hide their true identities and feelings. It's social, not legal.

  1. It's a good day for freedom. This is revolutionary in the history of India as well as in the history of liberty. This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes.
"Freedom! No word was ever spoken that held out greater hope, demanded greater sacrifice, needed more to be nurtured, blessed more the giver, cursed more its destroyer, or came closer to God's will on earth."
    -General Omar Bradley

  2. YAY! You just have to love news t/hat makes you want to say yay. This is such an important step for our world in the right direction towards equality. Obviously equality comes through a process and I am happy to say that this gives me hope that we may continue to move forward with that process.
