On Friday a 7.5 magnitude earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami that rocked Indonesia. At last count, over 800 individuals have died from this deadly disaster with many more unaccounted for along with 50,000 people without homes. Given the technology available, what makes this horrible natural disaster even sadder is many of these lives could have been saved.
The high tech sensors that are supposed to help the Indian Ocean countries has been delayed due to funding and worse the early detection buoys were found not to be working. In addition, the earthquake was centered close to the shore and the power outages effected the early warning system. This horrible event shows that despite being in the 21st century many parts of the world still have poor, simplistic warning systems. And unfortunately, this costs the lives of innocent victims.

It's so sad that there are innocent lives being taken by something that we can't control but it's horrible that some of the losses could have been prevented if they had the technology. -Courtney McColley
