Zoe Williams on Hurricanes in politics

This article talks about the politics behind natural disasters in America pivoting on hurricane Florence.  It discusses our natural disaster relief program and how the different administrators of different political parties have changed the effectiveness of it. It also brings up the Republican administration’s refusal to recognize climate change and how that decreases the effectiveness of our natural disaster preparedness.

This article was VERY interesting to read because the writer was almost absolutely biased towards Democrats. The entire article basically bashed the Republican Party.  Noting this, the article was unquestionably written for a democratic audience, to appeal to their beliefs.  But for me, a Democrat, it wasn't enjoyable for anything other than a good laugh, because it was just very accusatory and one-sided.  I am a person that has to hear both sides of something in order to make up my own mind on it, so this article was overall fairly unhelpful because I couldn’t tell what might’ve been over exaggerated and what was actually true.  The author backs his points about hurricane Florence up by relating the Trump administrations poor reaction to Hurricane Maria to the Bush administration’s lacking preparation to Hurricane Katrina in comparison to the Obama administrations control over an Ebola outbreak. At least the author had examples to prove his point, making his argument more agreeable, but his inability to see both sides caused me to question his credibility. All this being said, the author did bring up so very important topics that should be dealt with, just not in this way.

  1. This IS fascinating. I wonder if politics is inextricably linked to all we say and do or if there truly is such thing as a non political action?
