Trump to Cap Refugees Allowed Into U.S. at 30,000, a Record Low

Trump to Cap Refugees Allowed Into U.S. at 30,000, a Record Low

President Trump recently announced plans to reduce the maximum number of refugees allowed into the U.S. per year from 45,000 to 30,000, which would be a record-low number for the United States. Since coming into the presidency, Trump has shown to be severely anti-refugee and anti-immigration in general. Since coming into office, he had slashed the 110,000 cap set by Obama, replacing it with a cap of 50,000 instead. Some in his administration even wanted to slash it further to 15,000. The potential cut to 30,000 has been met with a general backlash from governmental administrators.
This cut shows the continuation of practices limiting immigration throughout the U.S's history, such as limiting Chinese immigration in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This cut also shows the general correlation of immigration with the emergence of more conservative policies and ideologies that have begun to emerge in the past century. In many ways, this very policy is central to the very reason Trump was elected president in the first place.
