Isadora Lilly- SpaceX Announced its First Space Tourist to Travel around the Moon in 2023

On Monday night, SpaceX, an American private aerospace company founded in 2002, announced its first paying "space tourist" to travel around the moon and back in 2023: Japanese billionaire Yusaka Maezawa. During a press conference, Maezawa revealed that he will be taking six to eight artists and cultural figures on the trip with him, saying, "I want to share this experience with as many people as possible (…). So, I choose to go to the moon with artists."

While founder Elon Musk and Maezawa did not disclose the price of the lunar voyage, it is known that the passengers will be flying aboard a new spaceship system being built by SpaceX called the BFR, or Big Falcon Rocket, currently being developed to reach nearly 400 feet high, with the first flights to orbit arriving in two to three years.

While I think that this is a culturally significant advance, Maezawa saying himself that he wishes to cause the production of art to "inspire the dreamer within all of us", I also wonder if future developments and a possible increase of space tourism could lead to negative effects on our society and environment to come.

  3. I love that the people who will go on this monumental journey are people just like the students at our school: artists.

  4. This is the kind of new that I wish dominated our world, instead of politics. I think we should all here more about how our world is advancing instead of it's self destruction.

  5. I think your view has a good point with this development by SpaceX. I have heard of this idea once before a little while ago. Its surprising that they are actually following through with it. Why artist though? What is the creators reasoning to take artist up to space with them?

  6. ^^^^ that is a very good question Joey. I think this idea is crazy amazing, and I really do hope they follow through with it because I will actually be old enough to comprehend a space ship launch now:’’)
I am very interested to see if they stick with the artist idea, and what they will make of it!! ~Mekinna Knight

  9. Must cost a fortune to be able to travel to the moon and back just as a tour.

  10. I think that space travel for everyday citizens will change not only outer space, but also Earth because then we could start using the same technology for faster international flights and such. I think that at this point in time though, the price and risk of human life will outweigh the benefits that it may bring.
