Sophie Knox- Massachusetts Gas Leak explosions
Summary: last Thursday afternoon there were multiple reports of fires and explosions around 25 miles away from Boston. At 6:30 PM the local police posted a map of where the explosions happened and confirmed that there were over 39 cases so far. They also warned people with Columbia Gas of Massachusetts to evacuate their house. In three cities the firemen had to call for a ten alarm response (the maximum fire response). Unfortunately, still there were many houses left burning due to how widespread and how many the fires were. The electric company, NationalGrid, decided to take down all power in all three effected cities to prevent sparked fires. After 8, there were reports of over 70 cases, and at least one 18 year old man died and over two dozen injured. Although many of them took place in the south, over 14 happened up north. The Columbia Gas of Massachusetts informed the public that they cut off all gas lines and do not yet know what went wrong. Many on social media are outraged that it took them over 5 hours to post instructions on their website, and that the public wasn’t getting any answers.
Analysis: This story is truly tragic and devastating. It’s terrifying to think that it could literally happen to anyone- in my neighborhood a little girl died due to a faulty gas pipe. The article was made to inform the public of what was happening, and to give instructions of what to do if you are living in the area. It’s not bias, and just presents facts of what is happening. This kind of reminds me of all the Californian fires too, who one small incident effects full cities of people. It also reminds me of the great Chicago fire. Fortunately this one is a lot less devastating, but like the Great Chicago Fire, it is killing and leaving many homeless.

Some of my mom's family lives in Andover, where this happened, so we were very worried for them until we got a response later that they were all ok. One of my mom's sisters lives on the gas line causing the explosions, so she had to evacuate her home. She was terrified, as were we. It's so scary how much trust we put into our homes, and how these incidents can touch the people close to us.
ReplyDeleteMy question is how this could of happened because doesn't the city have to do inspections or keep in check these sort of things so nothing like this occur? This article also relates back at the incident that occurred in the museum of Brazil because of a suppose gas leak as well.
