People of Color Making History at the Emmy's-Ariana Oliver

This article was updated by Sandra Gonzalez, a CNN reporter from CNN news, on September 9, 2018. On this past Saturday night, many actors of color made history as four of them earned awards in each guest category. People of color have won Emmy's before but not four in one year. Among the four winners were Tiffany Haddish, Ron Cephas Jones, Samira Wiley and Katt Williams. Haddish and Williams won best guest actress and actor for their work in a comedy series, "Saturday Night Live' and "Atlanta". Jones in "This Is Us" (NBC) and Wiley "Handmaid's Tale" (Hulu) won awards for best actor and actress in drama. Not only were they first time Emmy awards winners, but they were involved in telling the stories told about and by colored people.

I believe that that diversity was the big winner in this awards show. I think that the film industry (other industries as well but mainly film) is doing a great job at making good-faith efforts at real equality. I've learned that people of color or any ethnicity period don't get the chances to express themselves artistically because of this biased industry. The success of individual blacks today forces me to believe that there is hope for an actual end to racial discrimination (a long way from now) in the entertainment business, and that the community is working towards a change.

  1. I appreciate the thought put into the ending of discrimination in the industry. Unfortunately, I think that day is a long way away. I think that anti-discrimination can be easily manipulated nowadays such as hiring an actor/actress ONLY because they are of color.

  2. I agree with Sydney, as it is very common nowadays to hire or to be accepted into a college or institution solely based on a person's look or color. On the other hand, this can also be seen as a positive manifestation, because it shows how institutions are now making a conscious effort to display diversity. This can get people and populations thinking about the society we live in today, and to be able to make their own conscious choice on whether they will decide to choose equality.

  4. I love the fact that people of color are starting to be more recognized and accepted into the arts. Although Sydney and Isadora do have a point of it being common of hiring someone just because of their looks or ethnic backgrounds, I think more institutions are slowly starting to open up to everyone no matter what they are -adriana chavez
