The mother as the sole survivor, a family vacation quickly turned when a kayak capsized, killing the father and three children. Cari Mews and Erik Fryman took their children on an end of summer vacation to visit the apostle islands. The family recently had vacationed in the area last year and were looking forward to visiting again. They were kayaking from Madeline Island to Michigan island on Thursday afternoon when weather conditions caused water to get into the kayak and tipped over all five, each indeed wearing a lifejacket. Cari Mews was able to text her sister "911, Michigan Island", but the text didn't reach her sister until five hours later because there was no cell services in the area. Her sister was able to contact authorities and by the time the first boat arrived on the scene, it was 10 pm. They found Cari who was hypothermic and suffering, six hours later in the 60-degree water. Mews had become separated from her husband and their children when attempting to swim to Michigan Island. It was shortly after midnight when they found the father, one of the little girls, and the son. The next morning, they found the oldest daughter on the shore of Michigan island."Even with all the required safety equipment and all the right training, anything can happen when you get out on the lake," the Coast Guard's Justin Sickler told WCCO.
This article produced by CNN's Artemis Moshtaghian and Amanda Jackson on September 3rd, 2018 at 1:32 pm, was produced just days after the fatal incident. Hearing and seeing about this article on multiple news media I knew this was a tragic event that wasn't supposed to happen. Getting to read about this and being allowed to fully comprehend the sadness of this story made me interpret the article in a more angry motive. In the past, there have been multiple accounts of important military vessels that have gone missing and never been found, on a smaller scale this story was similar to that, but someone was found. This article was written for the people so they can understand the risks there are for not taking proper precautions, but also just to let people know of this horrible accident. The author, most likely saddened when hearing about this news, wrote this article in hopes someone would understand that there needs to be a better way to prevent this type of thing from happening. This article, to me, is important because it really signifies that if there were proper cell services and ways to reach someone close by, this whole incident would never have happened. Also, the amount of time it took for coast guards to get out on the water and find the family was absurd. Learning from this event, I believe there should be some type of GPS attached to all life jackets so coast guards can find people faster, and simplistically that coast guards can get out and look faster for survivors.
