Colin Kaepernick Nike Ad

It was just announced that former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick will be apart of Nike's 30th anniversary 'Just Do It' campaign. Many people know of Kaepernick because of his acts of protest by kneeling during the national anthem. Some people agree with his right to protest, and others think the way he was choosing to protest was disrespectful to veterans.

Personally, I believe that Kaepernick is a very brave and intellectual man who is using his platform  to raise awareness to issues that affect the African American community. I think he should have every right to peacefully protest in any medium he chooses, and he shouldn't have been fired. It's good that Nike is choosing to recognize his bravery and standing up for his rights.

The way people judge Kaepernick reminds me a lot of when people didn't like Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving the black power salute during their medal ceremony in 1968. Like Kaepernick, there was national outrage, and people focused more on how they felt about the salute, than what the salute actually meant and why they did it. They also both were never able to play the sport they loved so much ever again.
