Man shot in his own home by off duty officer Sally north

A man in Dallas, Texas was fatally shot in his own apartment by an off duty officer.

An off duty police officer, Amber Guyger, walked into her apartment complex but into the wrong unit and shot Botham Shem Jean. Guyger believed Jean was an intruder in her apartment, and due to this fatal error, Guyger was arrested on charges of manslaughter. Jean had no criminal record, but he did have a bachelor degree and straight a grades. This incident highlights racial tensions in America as Jean was another unarmed African American man killed by an off duty officer just like how Sgt. Richard Blake shot a man in the face while off duty in New York.

  1. I think this case is hard to crack. Since the lady thought she was going into her apartment, she was of shock seeing a person in what she thought was her home. But, she's a officer and in her mind was to automatically shoot ,when she is probably trained to do that in these type of situations.

  2. I agree with Eryn and say that maybe it was part of her instincts and seeing a stranger in where you think your home is can send you into panic. However, I also think she could have approached the situation in another way, such as maybe just pointing the gun at him and asking him what he’s doing or something, and then with explanation she could have realized it was the wrong apartment and no one would have died. -adriana chavez
