Lesly Marquez - Serena Williams called out sexism

For Serena Williams, a memorable U.S. Open Final for the Wrong reasons

Summary:

This article basically informed us about Serena William's open final against Naomi Osaka at Arthur Ashe stadium on Saturday September 8, 2018. The night did not go exactly as planned. Instead of winning and succeeding Serena lost to Naomi Osaka the first Japanese player to win a Grand slam. This didn't bother Serena because she had bigger problems that night. Serena stood on the tennis court calling the chair umpire a thief. Serena had to pay $17,000 for the 3 violations she caused that night. First she received a warning for receiving help from her coach then she slammed her racket and broke it. The third violation was for calling the chair umpire a thief. This upset Serena because she thought it was unfair. She said their was many tennis players that were men that had done worse things than that and never had any consequences. She made a statement saying that she felt like this was sexism because no man would have gotten any consequences.

I agree with Serena's statement. I think it was unfair and unprofessional of them to give her consequences just for being a women. This comes to show that we are still trying to overcome sexism.  It wasn't long ago when women first got the chance vote and be a part of the elections. I believe we can still work harder and do more to overcome things like this.

    1. i agree with you because if athletes like srena dont call out sexism in their sport when the see it, it will continue to happen in sports and people will think women are going to tolerate it. Im glad she spoke up about the injustice.

  2. I love that Serena spoke up about this issue. It is unfair that some men are able to walk away from a situation with no consequences, but when a woman makes a mistake or something of the matter, she is bombarded with all this negativity and discomfort. We have to do better.

  3. I agree with you it was rude an unfair that they accused her of cheating and give her consequences simply because she is a woman. And I believe we need to work on this topic and overcome sexism.
