Jude Holland - Severe Flooding after Hurricane Florence

This week, hurricane Florence, a category 1 storm that killed at least 12 people, has recently been "downgraded" to a tropical depression. Winds and rain have died down, flooding, however, has ravaged several counties in North Carolina, and has especially damaged the town of Wilmington.
Thousands of residents have been stuck inside powerless homes over the weekend, and flooded roads and neighborhoods prevent access to many cities. Over 900 citizens have been rescued from the raging waters, many narrowly escaping with their lives. A water supply company at Cape Fear has lost all fuel, and more cannot be delivered as access to the plant is completely cut off by floodwater. One statement by the company warns that they are in "critical need" of fuel, and if they don't get any in the next 48 hours, the station will be shut down and clean water will no longer be available. One Wilmington resident, Chris Tyner, said in an interview that he had "been through every hurricane since the 70's, and I've never seen anything like this before."

Analysis:

Hurricanes and natural disasters are forces of nature, meaning we really have no control over them. In the past, storms have decimated communities, such as the horrific Katrina in 2005 that killed 1,833 people, and destroyed entire towns. It is our responsibility to get every possible person of of danger before the storm hits, by warning them well in advance, and making sure everyone knows the danger of the storm coming. Many people however, no matter what refuse to leave their homes, and we can't really do anything about that, but besides those people, we need to warn every person possible to prevent the loss of life and property destruction that hurricanes like Florence cause.

  1. I agree with your statement that it is our responsibility to move these people to safety. With the multiple recent tropical storms in the last year that have devastated the world, I think that we should create laws that force people to move if the storms have enough threat and have enough warning time, just to save human lives.
