Haley Bogdon - Serena Williams Punished for Speaking her Mind

In this article, Serena Williams was unfairly fined for her anger when she spoke to the umpire about his behavior.  She was given a $17,000 fine and most of this was because of her comments to the umpire.  The umpire gave her a warning because he thought Serena was getting illegal coaching from the stands.  She denied she had cheated and wanted the umpire to apologize and broke her racket because she was so frustrated over losing a serve.  Because of this, the umpire gave her a one-point penalty and she then called him a thief.  Serena pointed out that a man who called an umpire a name such as thief would never had been treated and fined in this same way.  Women who show anger are said to be emotional and hysterical, while men are never even mentioned for being angry.  This shows the inequalities between men and women in the sport of tennis.

The author is trying to give the facts of what happened and then point out the way that men and women are treated differently in the sporting world.  This treatment of Serena is similar to the treatment of African-American and female players in the past and how they are treated in the sport of tennis.  Sixty years ago, Gibson was the first African-American player to compete in the US Nationals and she was yelled at and racial comments were shouted at her.  These and other examples were given to show that even though we have come a long way in treating men and women the same, there is still a very long way to go.

  1. I agree with this, men and women have always been treated differently. Its sad to see that this problem still happens, even with something as simple a a game of tennis.

  2. I totally agree. Gender inequality now is getting so out of hand that when a female speaks out about the issue, a big debate as so ignites. I think Serena Williams speaking up for herself and expressing her views on the subject matter paves the way for other females receiving the same backlash.- Ariana Oliver

  3. I definitely agree with the blog because women are always put below men and men’s voice is over women’s. This blog shows that this nonsense still happens today which is a very big issue. I am glad that Williams spoke up for herself to show that women do have a voice. #girlpower. -Paige McManaman

  4. I think that it’s so unfair how she was treated because she was just trying to defend herself and explain that she wasn’t cheating and now she being fined for standing up for herself. That’s not right.

  5. So disappointed that this is still happening to women. Women and men should be allowed to express their emotions. So happy that many people stood by her side and supporting her. #girlpower

  6. I have also heard/saw about a cartoon that was made of Serena throwing a fit on the court and crushing her tennis racket, with the umpire asking the opponent to "let her win". It really is awful how she was treated so unfairly. -Mia Murphy
