Facebook, YouTube and Apple remove Alex Jones and Infowars from their platforms
"Infowars" host Alex Jones has been removed from several social media platforms for breaking their user agreements on hate speech. You could find, on his Facebook, YouTube, and podcasts, him "glorifying violence,[...] and using dehumanizing language to describe people who are transgender, Muslims, and immigrants[...]" All of the platforms have said that these actions break the user agreement and that is why they removed him. Despite their claim, some people, including Jones, are saying the social platforms' actions were a liberal bias, and unfair censorship. This brings up the question, how will they deal with events like these in the future?
I don't agree with Alex Jones' views whatsoever, but I personally feel that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. In a country that allows free speech you have to be considerate of other people's opinion, you don't have to agree with them, but you do have to respect the fact that a person believes that. But, if someone's ideas become a catalyst for violence, or it disrupts the peace, that's when problems arise. That's exactly what happened in Alex Jones' case. When he created a social media account he agreed that he would not promote violence or disrupt the platforms peace, so when he broke that promise the platforms had every right to remove him. It wasn't a platforms' political bias, or its unfair censorship, it was simply them protecting the peaceful digital environment that they worked so hard to create.
This reminds me of another event that happened earlier this year with ABC, and Roseanne Barr. ABC was about the release a revamp of the classic show "Roseanne," starring Roseanne Barr. But, shortly prior to the release of the show, Barr posted a racist tweet. Because of her actions the show was canceled, and ABC fired her. When she posted that tweet, ABC had to make it clear that her actions didn't reflect on the channel itself, so they had the right to fire her.
