Fire at the National Museum of Brazil
On Sunday the second, the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro was ravaged by a severe fire, destroying several artifacts and historical items. A collection of history was faced with destruction. Though the fire was not caused directly, many believe that low funding, neglect, and corruption led to the destruction caused on that day. Thought it cannot be equated with similar events, these types of disasters have happened often throughout history.
Throughout history, parts of it have been destroyed and lost, but that doesn't make it less devastating when it happens. The fact is that losing anything is difficult, but when it is as important to history and culture as many of the items in the Museum were, it is hard to feel hopeful for the preservation of our history if things are so easily lost.

This is so tragic. Artifacts that have survived throughout the centuries only to perish in flames is devastating, as you put it. Not only is the artifact gone but it erases history as well.
ReplyDeleteIt’s very unfortunate that the place that protects these important historical artifacts still couldn’t save them and now there’s no way to get them back because of it.
ReplyDeleteThe burning of those important ancient artifacts is traumatic. The artifacts were a way for us to approach history and get a better understanding of it. To better understand the past we need to understand the artifacts, which is something that we are losing everyday now.-Ariana Oliver
