"Rio" Blue Bird Extinct -Grecia Jimenez

A study released this week revealed that the Spix macaw has officially gone extinct in the wild. Although there are still 60-80 Spix macaws in captivity, the species has been confirmed extinct by the report of BirdLife International. Deforestation has been one of the leading causes for the extinction of many species of birds over the last century due to the los of habitat and/or the disruption of the environment.  "...there is a growing wave of extinctions sweeping across the continents, driven mainly by habitat loss and degradation from unsustainable agriculture and logging" said Stuart Butchart, BirdLife's chief scientist and the paper's lead author.

There is an obvious reason why birds like the Spix macaw are going extinct, that is the disruption/destruction of their habitatts done by humans. If people continue to cut down all these trees and destroying the habitats of not only birds but thousands of other animals, we wont have many animals in the future. Many think that we dont really need animals and that it doesn't matter if they all die but the truth is that we need these animals to keep nature running and trees to grow because they produce the air we all need to live. Even if they did, think of it this way: if our homes were being destoyed and our communities torn apart, would we be ok with it? Of course not, so why do we continue to do that to these animals?

  1. I find it disgusting that people would let this happen to an entire species for their own profit. People need to respect these animals and understand how much it messes with the balance of nature when a species goes extinct.

  3. This article makes me see how some people don't really care about nature on like how you mentioned. I also do agree on how you said that we do need animals because it creates a balance in nature/ food web and it could lead to another species extincting or increase.
