EPA close to weakening rules on emissions of methane into atmosphere - will goodell
http://theweek.com/5things/795210/epa-reportedly-close-weakening-rules-emissions-methane
The Environmental Protection Agency is set to announce this week it's plan to overturn regulations set in place by the Obama admin, that requires oil and gas industries to monitor the amount of methane that is released into the atmosphere. Methane gases are highly dangerous greenhouse gas that is a contributor to climate change, and is released into the atmosphere with oil and gas leaks in oil wells. The EPA plans to cut back on previous regulations that make oil and gas companies do inspections every 6 months and repair leaks by 30 days, and make it so they can do inspections every year or two, and fix leaks by two months notice. The new motion also allows companies to abide by state methane regulations instead of federal regulations.
I believe the new regulations are truly discouraging for the future of our planet and generations to come. It is scientifically proven that methane is one of the most harmful greenhouse gases that pollutes our atmosphere, and for companies to knowingly loosen the restrictions upon them solely for economic gain speaks to our current political state. The current administration has thrown out most if not all previous policies that regulated factors of climate change, for the profit of energy companies and are further making our human footprint much much larger.
