Emma Lake: Swedish Woman Singlehandedly Halts a Man's Deportation to Afghanistan

http://time.com/5348120/swedish-woman-afghan-man-deportation-protest/

This is from July, but I thought it'd be worth sharing because I saw it on Tumblr and it made me cry, so

On a flight to Istanbul from Sweden, a young woman stood up on the plane to prevent it from taking off, attempting to practically save a man's life. She took video of this occasion, telling the camera in the midst of angry shouts and shoves, "I'm in an airplane, and there is a person getting deported back to Afghanistan. The people here working are trying to take my phone away from me just because the person is going to get deported to Afghanistan where there’s war, and he’s going to get killed.” She explains that sending the man back would be like signing his death warrant, and she would do what she could to stop that.

Y'all....I was in literal tears. In the latter part of the video, she begins crying because a group of people on the plane support her and tell her to keep doing what she's doing. She argues with a few people and even gets her phone snatched at, but remains strong. I was crying right along with the sad piano music.

This encounter is highly important, simply because this woman used her (very much so real) white privilege to save someone's life all out of the goodness of her heart. I can only imagine how bad this would've went if she were darker.

I have no clue of the horrors occurring in the Middle East, parts of Europe, and other developing/third world countries (I feel like that's a blanket term/false concept but for lack of better terminology). The sheer fact that this woman was moved enough to interfere is just...wow. Nobel Peace Prize who?

Prior to reading the article which is really just a synopsis of the events attached to the video, I was just randomly scrolling through Tumblr while it was apparently time for me to get my surprise annual dosage of depression from reading about more injustices my brethren are still facing, and in the midst of all this emotion this video pops up and tears are rolling down my face. Would I have cried watching this any other day?......probably. I can't even make that an argument. Safe to say I wasn't ready.

Most news articles are simply written to let people know what's goin' on. This was something I'm so glad I saw. This is crucial for everyone to see because it's in a way letting us know things that may seem so trivial can literally save someone else's next day. Whatever you can do to help someone, if no one else is there to do it there's absolutely nothing wrong with you being the person to stand up. You all, we may be young, but we're clearly the ones who can and will make a difference. Do something worthwhile. Put a little good in the world. It'll be worth it. This is pure heartfelt evidence. I rest my case.

  1. wow this is so sad and inspiring at the same time, this woman stood up for someone who represents the countless people who are judged by their religion or their race, for nothing in return.
