Chloe Meinershagen - Can North Korea and America ever be friends?

https://www.newsweek.com/trump-north-korea-kim-jong-un-choas-opinion-1094367

The Newsweek Article by Edward Howell is about the attempts to end conflicts between North Korea and the U.S. The two countries have been debating the nuclear weapons issue on both sides.  Pyongyang wants Washington to agree to not attack North Korea, to give economic relief in exchange for some nuclear dismantling, and to sign a Declaration to end the Korean War. Trump wants the complete denuclearization of North Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jon Un refuses to put weapons down unless America does it first, which is a stretch that Washington isn't going to agree upon. Trump has recently canceled his fourth visit to North Korea, which begs the question, "Has Trump finally realized that international relations are more difficult than once thought?" He may have to team with Seoul and Beijing to figure out this complicated puzzle.

My prior knowledge on this subject is minimal; I was aware that there was conflict between Trump and Kim Jon Un, and that the Korean War is still a struggle. I have ties to Korean culture and history; my grand parents were children during the Korean war, and my great grandparents were forced to leave North Korea and 2 of their older children (age 7 and 8 at the time) behind. They never were able to visit them again after the DMZ was formed.

This article was published on 8/29/18. I can connect this moment to Bill Clinton in 2000, when he was invited to go to North Korea to discuss a missile deal. Clinton took his time and eventually decided not to visit North Korea because he didn't feel comfortable with the possibilities of the affects that could play out.

This article is written for the general public, and takes a fairly neutral stance towards the information. Edward Howell, the author, is an Economic and Social Research Council Scholar in International Relations at the University of Oxford. He is a UK citizen. His views are not biased since he is a citizen of a country not involved. This article was written for informational purposes and conveys that Trump believed the solving of the conflict would be much simpler than it turned out to be.

This article is very important because nuclear missiles are a huge threat to American people. Kim Jon Un's attempts to fire shots near America is an enormous attack on  the safety of all US citizens. It's important for the relationship of America and North Korea to be some what peaceful, but it has never been an easy task for any president.
