Andrew Gillum - Perla Diaz

Andrew Gillum wins Florida governor primary

Summary: Andrew Gillum won the Florida governor primary in an upset victory. Andrew was going up against Gwen Graham who had 31% of the vote while Gillum had 34%. His victory in part was largely due to Democratic voter turnout which was up about 70% compared to 2014. Gillum's win is seen as a very significant and hopeful moment for those on the left due to his progressive ideals such as gun control, health care for all, supports the impeachment of Trump and is backed by Bernie Sanders. He will now be going up against Ron DeSantis who is pretty much his complete opposite.

Analysis: I think that this is a very hopeful turnout because after the 2016 presidential election I think we need as many progressive representatives as we can get. Although this is an election in Florida and it may not directly affect me I think as a country any little victory is a hopeful one for the future. I think now that Gillum is going to have to go up against DeSantis, it is important now more than ever for more people to get registered and actually vote. It is the only way we will ever be able to see any sort of progressive representative in office and is the only way to show our representatives what we want to see more of or less of.
This can tie back to the 2016 presidential election where chances are if more people would have actually bothered to vote we might have a leader with more progressive ideals. I think that election can serve as a perfect example of what we don't want to ever see repeated again and hopefully encourage more democratic voters to actually have their voice be heard in these elections no matter how small they may seem.
