This article discusses the major win of a British actor Idris Elba at the 2016 Oscars awards. His awards (for his roles in the detective drama Luther and supporting role as as African warlord in Beasts of No Nation) gained an increased amount of attention because Idris Elba was of African descent. It was a such a big moment in the Oscar industry because there has been an increased amount of controversy over the lack of diversity in Oscar nominees (as I had written in in my blog post last week...I had wanted to do a follow up for my post this week).
As I mentioned last week, this is a perfect example of the reverse of what had happened during the Civil Rights movement. People had not even questioned discrimination because of the normality of it, and now people are criticizing people for not enforcing diversity among famous industries such as the film industry. The large amount of non-white winners at the awards reflects this change in ideology. Although the issue of discrimination has decreased largely since the Civil War movement, it is finally starting to become a moral crime in many people's eyes. It is great to see the reversal of one of the most terrible times in history.

After subdued speech, Trump supporters are left expecting a little more...oomph
Summary: On Monday night, Ted Cruz pulled out an upset victory in the Iowa caucus. Donald Trump, the favorite, gave his losing speech, and his supporters were disappointed, as it was only three minutes long. He left quickly, already on his way to a rally in New Hampshire.
Analysis: Trump, a very confident candidate, was very likely shocked at the caucus results. Typically not one to hold back, Trump likely did so to not say anything that would affect his standings.
Tajia Stroud (5th period): Animals Choose Their Tunes***
Summary***
According to recent studies, music choices vary not only per person, but per species as well. For example, research showed that listening to audio books and people reading relaxed dogs more than popular music or even classical. Tamara Montrose, program manager of Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Hartpury College, stated that she found it rather surprising that audio books happened to be the more favorable than classical music because of the positive effects of classical music that have been documented in a range of other species. Listening dogs tended to show peaceful behavior and reduced barking, pacing, and standing. They even slept more pleasantly after listening to the audio book.
Analysis***
I think that this article finally brought to attention that animals do have a perception about things that some humans believe they can't understand. The published research about dogs responding to audio books and narrators made me think that it might have more to do with the fact that dogs have lived with humans for so long. Perhaps dogs have gotten more accustomed to their human's commands and tones so our voices make them feel much more comforted. I think that we haven't really tried to notice how much animals respond to everyday things that they seem to like or dislike. The advancement in research lately might actually show us a lot more than we thought we could ever know about the creatures that we share the earth with.

IT GETS WORSE Julia Woltjen (3rd period)
SUMMARY:
The trial involving the death of the 13 year old has not progressed much but now new information has come to light about the alleged murderers. Natalie Keepers is being held on accessory to murder as well as charges of concealing a body. While she awaits trial many interviews have revealed that Natalie suffers depression and anxiety attacks, which she was medicated for at the college. While it is still dumbfounding that two seemingly prosperous college students could do this heinous crime, the fact that now Keepers' actions could be blamed on mental health issues is a complete turn of events and will alter the trial completely.
ANALYSIS:
In my opinion mental illness should not be blamed for her assistance in this crime. Now I have neither depression and only Junior year anxiety, so I don't fully understand either, but I feel that anxiety ad depression would not drive a person to kill a 13 year old girl. I feel that these issues are constantly being blamed on different illnesses and that isn't justice to that girl or her family. I hope this trial goes smoothly and that justice is served were it needs to be served.

Thought of as Freewheeling, Bernie Sanders Sticks to a Script That Sounds Fresh By Lisl Wangermann Period 1
Yamiche Alcindor's article "Thought of as Freewheeling, Bernie Sanders Sticks to a Script that Sounds Fresh," was published by the New York Times on January 31, 2016. In the article, Alcindor describes Sanders' stump speech that apparently has listeners hooked. In it, he jokes about and mocks Republican hypocrisy and introduces his new ideas, including his plan to create tuition free public colleges. According to a college professor, the fact that the audience seems completely in the moment (and is not on their phones) during this hour long speech is a testament to its success in supporting Sanders for president. Sanders' consistency and clear message also set him apart from other, more volatile candidates.
This article reminds me of previous political leaders we have learned about in class recently, particularly Theodore Roosevelt. Although on the surface they seem very different, Sanders and Roosevelt have a lot in common, including their support of regulation and their tendency towards reforms. Additionally, Sanders is somewhat of an underdog candidate, and Roosevelt was made vice president so that he would never have the chance to lead. Both of them are charismatic in an unexpected way. Also, both of them are sticking to what they are good at. For Sanders, this speech shows his strong suits so he has leaned on it. Roosevelt stayed to true to who he was, an outdoorsman, a soldier, and an American, and he banked on those things during his time in office, using his time as a Rough Rider as a big selling point. I am interested to see how this election plays out and what Sanders does in the future.
America's Voting System// Arianna Sotero
This CNN article discusses the long and difficult road presidential candidates take to earn the big seat at the white house. But, it also discusses how the people vote, how much elections cost, and why they last so long. It's more than just whatever candidate earns the most votes. In this article you see the top Democratic candidates (Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders) and the top Republican candidates (Donald Trump, Ted Cruz). The general election will occur on November 8, 2016.
Although today's voting process is very complicated and prolonged, much different than it was when elections first began, certain rules and techniques still remain intact. For instance, instead of selecting a president based on how many votes they receive, the Founding Fathers established what's called the electoral college. Each state gets the same number of electors as it has Congressman and Senators, and the bigger the state, the more electors it has. In all but two states, Maine and Nebraska, it's a winner-take-all system. In the end, whoever receives 270 Electoral College votes or more wins (ties and recounts excluded). Overall, America's voting process is crazy and in disarray.

Natalie Keepers and David Eisenhauer were charged on Sunday and Saturday respectively with felony charges for the death of 13-year old Nicole Lovell of Blacksburg, Virginia. Nicole went missing Wednesday and her body was found Saturday. Keepers and Eisenhauer are both general engineers at Virginia Tech. Nicole's mom says that she was severely bullied at school and often stayed home because the bullying was too much. She commented that her and Eisenhauer might've met online, and her room was left in such a way to suggest that she snuck out to meet him.
This is super shady honestly, why would a middle schooler meet up with a college kid and why would two college kids plot to abduct and murder a middle schooler? This reminded me of the movie Carrie because the girl was just looking for a way to be happy and she ended up dead. I just find the entire thing really confusing and upsetting.

Taytum Buford(Period 6)-Banana during English(Gilded Age)
Summary: This isn't a formal incident, but I wanted to write about it anyways. In English, we are reading Julius Caesar and we have to perform a scene about omens and record them. I was the interviewer and I didn't have a microphone, so I used Mr. Victory's banana as a microphone. At first we just kept it closed, but then one of the girls in my group thought it would be funny if we opened it and she bit it at the end of the interview. So we did, but when we opened it, we were surprised by how bruised it was on the inside.
Analysis: This can relate to the Gilded Age. Everything looked perfect and fine on the outside, but once you peel back the pretty layers, it is all ugly and bruised. Mark Twain is kind of like the girl who suggested we peel the banana because he was the one who gave it a name.
Link: My Testimony, Mr. Victory, and the kids in my group.

Alexis Farrell, 5th Period: Things to Know About the Oregon Wildlife Refuge Occupation
Dwight and Steven Hammond lit fires on federal property so that invasive plants wouldn't grow and wildfires wouldn't occur. The two were convicted and served time in jail. The men were trying to create a landscape that people could own instead of government and that served as place to hike, fish, and grow plants. Also, it would be a location used for ranching and mining. Residents really liked this idea but federal land managers said this was a step too far and made the town of Burns section off. Bundy and the other leaders are in jail waiting for another court hearing currently.
The article mentions the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge created in 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt. After all of his hard work to preserve the land, this is quite disappointing. Specifically, the rest area for migrating birds needs to stay there because "20 percent of the state's breeding population of greater sandhill cranes."

Fighting Zika, The Spreading Virus by Brenna Hale(6th period)
El Salvador sanitation workers have launched a battle against the mosquitoes spreading the virus called Zika. Some people are referring to it as the new Ebola. Since the disease was confirmed in their country at the end of November there have been 6,000 or so suspected cases, with 2,500 since the beginning of 2016 alone. The health ministry said women should hold off becoming pregnant this year and next. This has caused huge uproars from feminists, and Morena Herrera, president of the Citizen's Group for the Decriminalization of Abortion, says that this is not enough. Women in El Salvador are not well informed enough about contraceptives. The Catholic Church inputted that the government has is telling women not to get pregnant, but are they doing enough about the Zika- carrying mosquito? A country of Catholicism is dead set on no abortion, they question whether an abortion is better than risking a child born with damaged cells. El Salvador is a poor country with limited resources in a time of great medical need.
This article was written by Katy Watson to inform readers about the Zika virus which has popped up in South America. This article does not state the symptoms or long term affects of those who contract Zika which would come in handy for someone unbeknownst to this disease, like me. It's horrible what could possibly happen to the unborn children in the mothers who have contracted Zika. This reminds me of the diseases in the slums of America during the Progressive Era, such as Cholera, Tuberculosis, and Yellow Fever. These neighborhoods we're not wealthy enough to buy what medicine there was, and they did not have the medicinal aids we take for granted today.

California Escapees Back in Jail // Olivia Gillis P3
The two remaining fugitives from a California jailbreak last week are now back in custody. The two were captured Saturday morning after someone alerted officers that the car the escapees were using had been spotted. When officers found one fugitive, he attempted to sprint off but didn't make it very far. The other escapee was found in a car at a nearby Whole Foods. Detectives are trying to figure out if the two had any help from outside sources. The third escapee was taken into custody on Friday in Santa Ana. The trio most likely broke out of a high security jail after a 5am headcount on January 22, and the escape was discovered 15 hours later. The inmates used tools to cut through bars and into air vents, eventually finding a way out. This is the first time anyone has escaped since 1998.
Last week, I did my current event on this same story, except the escapees had yet to have been found. It's very comforting to everyone to know that these criminals have been found and taken back into custody, especially those who live in the Santa Ana area. Luckily, the trio didn't make it far from the jail where they were originally arrested, and were easily tracked down by detectives. Hopefully precautions will be taken in the future to ensure that events like this one won't happen again.

Air Force Upgrade by Matthew Homsher 9th
Summary: The Air Force received a new weapon
system in order to protect against hackers. It recently reached full
operational capability. It’s called the Air Force Intranet Control Weapon
System (AFINC for short), and even though it has weapon system in the name, its
main goal is to make cyber-attacks on the Air Force more difficult. It accomplishes this by limiting the number of
access points from 100 to 16 making defense against cyber-attacks more
manageable. In the words of Air Force Colonel Pamela Wooley, “We are definitely
not trying to weaponize cyber. This is truly a defensive system to protect the
Air Force Network.” Colonel Wooley says AFINC is “literally kind of a fence
line” and considering the Air Force is subjected “more than one billion
firewall, web, and email blocks per week” it is one important fence.
Synopsis: This kind of cyber defense for the Air
Force resembles the beefing up of the military after World War 1, except now we
have to defend our computers and our country.
The main concern of something like this is that it could become a weapon,
but as stated a million times by the Colonel it is “truly a defensive system.” This
sounds all in all, like a good step for the Air Force.

Madi Thoele, 4th Pd: Vanessa Hudgens Loses Dad, Performs In Show Hours Later
Summary: 27 year old Vanessa Hudgens lost her father, Greg, on Sunday, January 31st to stage 4 cancer. He was 65 years old. What makes this story even more sad is the fact that on this same day she starred as Rizzo in Fox's "Grease: Live" just hours after she received the news. She said she will perform in his honor.
Analysis: This must have been so hard for Vanessa to push through the show when she received the terrible news shortly before. She and the suffragettes of the Progressive Age are similar. The suffragettes had to deal with extreme and institutionalized sexism, but through it all, they stayed strong and eventually the 19th amendment was passed. Vanessa had to endure her tragedy, but performing in "Grease: Live" is a huge accomplishment she should be proud of. The suffragettes and Vanessa both have shown impressive perseverance and courage to come out strong and achieve goals. The show must go on!

Barbie's New Body, Darby McMahon PD#9
Women don't come in one size and now neither do Barbie's. Along with the origional Barbie, additional Barbie's are now being made with curves, height variations, etc.. Tania Missad, director of consumer insights, talked about how girls need to stop being compared to the unrealstic doll. According to her Barbie will now come in four body types, seven skin tones, 22 eye colors, 24 hair styles, ending up with 33 different doll variations. These changes come after years of critisism from consumers about unrealistic doll proportions, and an impossible standard for girls. A 2006 study found that girls exposed to the old Barbie reported lower self esteem and greater desire for a thinner body shape. These new changes will send a new more positive message about body image.
Source:CNN- Barbies New Body
For so many years Barbies have been a negative role model for little girls, and the new Barbie just shows that society is becoming more accepting. This article was writen by Michael Pearson, CNN, and it is complete with pictures of all of the new dolls, It really shows the drastic change and diversity. It is very important that this story is shared because although it is just a few modifications, it symbolizes a new era and way of thinking of Barbies. One of the worst things about the old Barbie was that there was only one version of her. Diversity is very important, its just like Chinese immigration and how America passed the Chinese Exclusion Acts.

Teenage girls pose in racial slur shirtThe article I read from BuzzFeed discusses the outrage that has ensued after six Arizona teen girls wore shirts that spelled the N word. The girls wore the shirts for a school picture day involving their whole senior class. The particular photo spelling out the racial slur was of six senior girls at Desert Vista High School and was initially intended for snapchat. The photo spread rapidly all over social media and was soon acknowledged by parents of the school. This caused an entire dilemma between the parents and students of the school, and the principal. The principal said the girls would be disciplined, however students and parents weren't in agreement of that. There is now a petition going on to get the girls expelled.
Despite all the racism going on in our country and world, this one hurts the worst because it's coming from teenagers that are my age, meaning racism is ongoing and is continuing to develop in my generation and the generations to come. Obviously racism dates back all the way to the time of slavery, when African Americans were called the N word daily. Racism continued through the Civil Rights Movement, where African Americans fought for their rights in this country. And now, although we've been able to gain our rights, the fact that a group of people are bold enough to display that word and share it on social media hurts my heart and baffles my mind. Our world is going in the wrong direction and a change needs to happen in order to open the minds of the ignorant and less accepting.

Solving the special ed teacher shortage - Kate Fehan 8th Period
A special ed teacher shortage has forced many schools in the US choose quantity over quality when hiring. These less qualified teachers are often not ready for the challenge of teaching special ed and are more likely to quit within the first two years. The Lee Pesky Learning Center in Idaho is pioneering what could be a long term solution to that problem. The nonprofit is working with Boise State University to train teachers and help more kids with learning disabilities. Interested college graduates spend a year working at the Center while taking classes to get a master's in teaching. The whole program is paid for by a scholarship from Alan and Wendy Pesky. This won't fix the shortage immediately, but it will help find better long-term teachers.
We wouldn't have special ed teachers or schools yet if it weren't for reformers like Dorothea Dix, who fought to improve conditions for the mentally ill and people with learning disabilities, and Horace Mann, who promoted American education. Although Public Law 94- 142, which established special ed in public schools, wasn't passed until 1975, the efforts of reformers made special education possible today.

This is a report of a woman who had severe PTSD from serving in an intense coast guard job, and a parrot providing her with therapy. Lilly love was at Veterans Administration medical center trying to receive treatment, and nothing was quite working. They had her on many psychiatric drugs at a time, when she first saw parrots at the facility it was almost like a mirage. Love now cares for the parrots each day, feeding them and even rehabilitating some.
If love would not have found these parrots, she may not have ever received healing. The parrots and love received healing together, and from each other. This reminded me of Dorothea Dix, and I figured she would be proud of this progress.

Trump vs. Cruz by Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex
Throughout the presidential campaign, candidates Ted Cruz and Donald Trump have been insulting each other trying to strengthen their campaign. On Sunday Ted Cruz claimed that "A vote for Donald Trump is a vote for Obamacare". Trump retaliated by calling Cruz "a total liar". Recently Trump has pulled ahead of Cruz in Iowa, mainly focusing on Cruz's Canadian roots. Cruz accused Trump of supporting "socialized medicine for every American" and connected his position on health care to presidential candidate Hilary Clinton and President Barack Obama.
I think it's sad that the candidates have to insult each other in order to feel in control. Politics have really gone down hill. If Cruz and Trump can't act like adults while running for President, why would they be good in office?

Warship Passage Near Disputed Island -Julianne Swaykus 6
Near a disputed southern China Sea Island, claimed by China and 2 other nations, A U.S. Navy destroyer passed within 12 miles of Triton Island. China's Defense Ministry claims to have forced the destroyer USS Curtis Wilber out of the area. "Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Bill Urban said the freedom of navigation operation by the Wilbur took place Saturday near Triton Island in the Paracel Islands chain in the northern part of the sea 'to challenge excessive maritime claims.'"
This even reminds me of The Great White Fleet we sent around the world on December 16, 1907. China has been building up their navy, which has become a threat to the US, so as a reminder/warning, we sent one of our Navy destroyers around their territory.

Anatomy Wins by Kera Mickus
For the past decade, and longer, Barbie bodies have been spectacled and ridiculed for their distinctly thin (and visibly underweight bodies) by women who grew up and realized they were being groomed in social expectations even as small children. For the past few years, there has been talk of releasing a line of barbies no longer "thin", "flat", and "ridiculous" in size or appearance. Mattel, courtesy of Tania Missad, is releasing a new line of varied dolls with new combinations, as well as a interchangeable ankle to allow for shoes beyond heels. 'A 2006 British study (PDF) found that "girls exposed to Barbie reported lower body esteem and greater desire for a thinner body shape" than those who had been given dolls reflecting larger body types or no dolls at all.'
This parallels the early colonists struggle for independence from their ridiculous British government. We, Americans, saw that we should have basic human rights, and these were mocked and parodied by the Great Britain gov't, so we fought for what we saw was right. The modern consumer, seeing that Barbie's overly modelic body was leading to lower female confidence, decided to rise against society's indifference to acceptance, and spoke out for what is right. Women AND men should be able to walk confident that what they have is enough. No one can have the same thing, and no should want to walk the same footprints, or fit the same mold as someone else. Citizens of some other countries still lack fundamental rights that cannot be violated by anyone else. Although Barbie's body seems far off and irrelevant to human rights, it's more about choosing what is true than what is accepted.
Nicholas Godfrey Period 8: Teen climbs the Great Pyramid of Giza
Summary: 18 year old Andrej Ciesielski was touring Egypt, when he decided to do something illegal but he thought it woulds definitely be worth it. He runs a blog in which he posts about all his adventures, so he thought that it would be appropriate to make a stop at the pyramids of Giza. He saw an opportunity that he knew that the photos would be worth the consequence. When nobody was looking, he quickly hopped the fence and scaled the Great Pyramid of Giza. He made it up very quickly. He did this knowing that the penalty could end up with him in jail for three years. About halfway up the pyramid, the police noticed him climbing. He continued his ascent and got all the photos and video he wanted from his GoPro. He slowly went down the pyramid and turned himself into police custody. The authorities were going to take him to the German Embassy, but instead let him go on account that he would delete all footage and photos. He "deleted" them, but the authorities didn't know that he had software that allowed him to recover all of the files.
Analysis: I think this is awesome! This kid realized how cool the footage would be from the top, and decided that the risk was worth it. I was reading this, and at first I was kind of irritated by the fact that the police took him in. He didn't hurt anything by climbing it, so I was mad that they would make him delete the photos too (although he ended up not). Re-analyzing it, I realized that if he hadn't been taken into custody, anybody would think they could do it too, and then this amazing landmark will be destroyed. This is like when Theodore Roosevelt set aside land to be designated as national parks, to preserve areas from destruction. I just hope that the Egyptian authorities don't try to extradite him once they see these videos. If you want to watch the video of him climbing it, here is the link: https://youtu.be/s6X-1ShM8uA

The New Face of Barbie Tymie Jadagu 6th P
link to article: Barbie's new body: curvy, tall and petite - CNN.comSummary: When the Barbie Brand was released in 1959, it was a much different brand than the one we see now. The barbie we are used to seeing is impossibly slender, one race, and has often been linked to giving young girls a lower self image. According to Mattel, Barbie will now come in four body types and seven skin tones, with 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. In all, 33 dolls will roll out in stages. This change was prompted by many study's and responses from audiences that demanded a change in what is seen as the standard of beauty.
Analysis: The changing face of barbie reminds me of all the reform movements that were lead through out the gilded, progressive, and antebellum eras. For example labor unions, they led strikes, and muckrakers exposed the harmful affects of some factory practices, and this inspired changes in the laws. A parallel can be drawn to this, as people prompted barbie to make a change, and many people conducted studies, which could been seen as another for of muckraking to show the negative affects of barbie, and now, we have a new barbie that caters to almost every girl, and we are now a few steps closer to a solution for raising young girls' self esteem.

College? - Christa Hamby p1
The GED Testing Service recently decided to lower the passing score for its high school equivalency exam, making thousands of students newly eligible for a GED credential. The decision to change the passing score – from 150 to 145 – wasn’t entirely surprising. In 2014, the service overhauled the test to better align to the Common Core State Standards, a set of challenging academic benchmarks representing what students should know by the time they finish each grade, including by the time they graduate high school. Most education policy experts say the GED Testing Service was right to drop its passing score. After all, they say, passing simply equates to earning a high school degree, and doesn’t necessarily mean those who do are prepared for college-level work. The bottom quarter of earners with a college degree don’t make more money than the average high school graduate. And this hasn’t really changed much in 40 years.
Colleges need to be restructured drastically. Spending two years and thousands of dollars on "core" and "getting well rounded" needs to be removed from the educational process. We can no longer afford to justify the existence of professors in "fluff" courses that have nothing to do with the job/major. IMHO requiring a CS major to take a bunch of humanities, PE, Art etc is outright theft! Keep those courses in high school where they belong. Then expand the college offering to include good solid technical education and actual career preparation in the fields that are hiring!!!

'Grease: Live' prepares to roll-- Demi Tomasides
Okay, so given the nature of our school, I doubt I'm the only one here that's completely psyched for Grease: Live tonight. And given the nature of our country I now I can't be the only one psyched. Tonight is the live, TV version of the 70s Broadway hit Grease. The cast includes Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy and Keke Palmer as Marty alongside Julianne Hough's Sandy and stage veteran Aaron Tveit's Danny.
This is the fourth live TV production of a musical that Fox has done. The first three being "The Sound of Music" (2013), which really started this whole phenomenon, "Peter Pan" (2014) and "The Wiz" (2015). In a way Fox has got their own Captain of Industry thing going. They took a new idea, with classic gems and put it up for the world to see. And better yet for the audience, it's free. Fox is making their money by selling commercials. And let me tell you, with between the artsy side this weekend and the Superbowl next weekend, they're probably more than willing to pay those high prices for a huge audience. It's a win-win for all. Oh ya, and in the fall they're going to be doing Rocky Horror, so it's interesting seeing what they chose. I'm curious to see how Grease goes as well as this whole industry of live action.

Burned by nail polish remover

Brittany Smith tells her story to warn others about the dangers of acetone nail polish remover. She was home by herself one day taking her nail polish off with a bowl of acetone nail polish remover and a lit candle on the other end of the dresser. Smith said, "These two were not nowhere near close." Next thing she knows her clothes are catching on fire. She had third degree burns covering 30 percent of her body, from her chest down to her thighs. The vapors from the acetone nail polish remover ignited and sent the flames onto her clothes. After nine months she was ready to tell her story and to warn others about flammable chemicals.
This reminds me of when congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act. This act prevented the manufacture or sale of misbranded or poisonous foods or drugs. Although this article is not talking about food or medicine, the Pure Food and Drug Act still applies to all products that include chemicals. The nail polish remover companies are now required to label their product with all the chemicals used and specify if it could be flammable. I think that these companies need to advertise more about the dangers of the chemicals because I didn't know that the vapors of the acetone would catch on fire and I am always painting my nails.

Boat Sinks En Route To Greece, Killing At Least 37 Migrants- Tori Gilchrist, 1st period
Thirty-seven immigrants were killed tragically when a boat headed to Greece, carrying over 100 people, hit rocks that were near the shoreline and quickly sank. The coast guard helped to save some 75 people. Many were taken to hospitals to seek help with hypothermia and other injuries or illnesses, while some others were taken into police custody for questioning. The Associated Press notes that most of the immigrants were Syrians.
This tragedy is only a small reflection of what's happening to Syrian refugees around the world and here in the US. America's responses to immigration crises have evolved significantly, due to changes in foreign policy and the rising power of our international population. However, negligence is still a huge issue in our country. Xenophobic policies have been around since the birth of the US, but hopefully muckraking coverage of events like the sinking boat will help change our minds.

DemoDebate- Tea Devereaux
As the last Democratic Debate took place in South Carolina, candidates Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Martin O'Malley, took time to address some topics surrounding the U.S. today. Some of the subjects they discussed were health care, gun control, Wall Street, and the deployment of soldiers to the Middle East. Soon, the discussion started to become more of a conversation between Sanders and Clinton as they tried to get back at each other for points addressed by one another and O'Malley somewhat fell behind as he was not able to fully keep up throughout the debate.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/17/politics/democratic-debate-2016-highlights/
I believe that the candidates debate is similar to the Lincoln-Douglas Debates that also discussed pertinent subjects impacting the lives of people during that time period. However, I believe that the Sanders, Clinton, and O'Malley should not have left some major topics out of the debate like immigration since it was only slightly discussed by O'Malley at the end.

Gun Control!!!
Attorney General Loretta Lynch defends President Obama's gun control measures. She told a senate committee that Obama's recent executive actions on guns are lawful. Lynch believes that stricter gun control laws are essential because of the on going gun violence going on in the country. The conflict between Obama and the Congregational Republicans is said to be one of the biggest political fights in Obama's last year of office.

I agree with Obama's attempts for gun control measures in the country. Although gun control may not fully stop criminals, this attempt can save lives. When the Second Amendment was written, it was to maintain a free state and in order to do so, the people must retain the right to bear arms. President Obama added that these actions are "entirely consistent with the Second Amendment".

"Zebra Cousin Went Extinct 100 Years Ago and Now It's Back" Tea Perez 1st period
The quagga is an animal that is a relative of the zebra that went extinct over 100 years ago. Now, a group of scientists outside of Cape Town are bring it back. Like zebras, the quagga has stripes, though these only appear on the front half of their bodies. Unlike the zebra, they are brown along the rear half of their body. These animals used to roam South Africa in vast herds, but European settlers fixed the beasts in their sights, killing them at a fast rate. By the 1880s the last known example had died. Now scientists have bred an animal that looks strikingly similar with the help of DNA and selective breeding.
This study is vey fascinating. If scientists can copy almost an exact DNA of an extinct species what can they do next?

The Quagga is Back-Margaret King 1st
Scientists have recently been successful in their attempt to "resurrect" extinct species by using reverse engineering, or in other words selective breeding. The Quagga is an animal similar to a Zebra that went extinct over 100 years ago. It has stripes on the front of its body and the back half is brown. Eric Harley, leader of the Quagga Project, says that each new generation of fouls are becoming more and more like their once-extinct ancestors. This means that there is a possibility to save all of the creatures that are endangered and maybe even bring some back.

"Father charged after girl, 12, is killed by police constable"- Leah Messinger (period 1)
On January 11, 12-year-old daughter of Donald Meyer, Ciara Meyer, was accidentally shot and killed by a police man in Perry County. The death of his daughter was not intentional, however; it was a result of, "Meyer's reckless conduct". Donald is being charged with homicide and involuntary manslaughter because according to officials he knew that his daughter was standing behind him, and he triggered a chain of events that unfortunately led to the death of Ciara. The police were originally at his apartment to serve Meyer a valid eviction notice when the police officer pointed his gun at Donald that traveled through his arm and hit Ciara killing her. Donald views this incident as the police's excuse for killing Ciara while the police believe that Donald's knowledge of his daughter standing behind him was intentional and used to his advantage.
Whatever the truth of the matter is, this accident is truly depressing. In a way, it compares to the Gilded Age's "Yellow Journalism" because if it is true that the police are trying to cover themselves up, then that is to an extent what those writers would have done to appeal to the public. It is sad that whatever happens in society might be in some way be covered up or altered to appeal to the public and make the situation appear better. Censorship is another touchy subject, but is also an important one to be considered when assessing how true things in the media are.

The kids in the trunk Katie Schell(flex)
original: by- Ed Payne Jan. 19, 2016
A tutor from a Nashville area elementary school was charged with reckless endangerment when police found three children in the trunk of the tutors car. Although the tutor denied ever having the kids in her trunk a surveillance video from a Speedway gas station showed three children exiting the trunk of the vehicle once it had stopped. The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools has put her
(the tutor) on administrative leave while an investigation is being conducted.
Imagine entrusting a person with your child only to find out later that your kid was being handled like a bag of grocery-stuck in a persons trunk. I would flip a switch if that was my kid. What the heck was this person even thinking? When I am entrusted with another persons things let alone another persons child, I am going to make gosh darn sure that I handle that belonging or person with extreme care! This woman needs to get her booty fired and thrown out of the teaching career field. It is a sad fact that there have been too many cases of dangerous or troubling happenings in our education system. It's not the first nor sadly the last time something like this is going to happen, but this only goes to show that we need to be extremely careful with whom we entrust our kids to. When we send our little ones off to school we are putting them in trust with the education establishment. This event is not only the tutors fault but also the schools.

2 kids die for drinking "Dewshine" -Simon Waranch 3rd period
2 kids died in Tennessee for drinking "Dewshine", a combination of methanol and mountain dew. A group of 16 year olds mixed mountain dew and Methanol and drank it, 2 of them were hospitalized and Logan Stevenson, J.D. Byram died, Logan Stevenson dies last thursday and J.D. Byram died on monday. Methanol is used in a gas and when consumed by someone, the effects are confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and headaches...etc.
This is a unfortunate event. In todays society, teenagers want to get a "high" and it seems that a lot of people try to try new things. The problem is, in the moment kids are not thinking of the consequences-there just wanting to get a "high". People need to think about the future and how dumb it is to make that poor of a decision. Drug Abuse is to Blame for the Rise of hep. B in 3 States-Nicholas Watson, 9th
Summary:
Three states have seen a huge increase in the liver infection known as hepatitis B, which is to be blamed for the increase in the abuse of injection drugs. The research released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday found that the disease soared 114% in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia from years 2009-2013. The use of injection drugs were the main factors in a third of those cases. Surprisingly many people aren't surprised at this spike in the disease because of the fact that 9/10 people who are abusing these drugs and doing it by the method of injection (in many cases the needles that they use are usually dirty, which increases the chance of obtaining the virus). In many scenarios many researchers are scared that this spike could foreshadow a bigger national problem. In response many states are establishing training programs and have boosted campaign awareness campaigns and education for health care providers.
Analysis:
Although America has always battled with the abuse and heavy consumption of drugs and narcotics, I have noticed that recently a surge of cases dealing with abusers and new drugs being made, are forming in America. This is scary because as the youth of America becomes more exposed to these drugs, we will most likely see a spike in the consumption of dugs in youth. This would be an extremely dangerous situation because, now days with all of the new ways and things drugs are being made with, it makes the consumption of any drug a lot more dangerous due to the lack of knowledge those consumers have about the origin and ingredients of those drugs. To battle back against this serious problem I think the establishment of new rehab centers and increased efforts to stop these major drug distributers are going to be a major key in stopping the amount od drugs being taken, therefore decreasing how many people are hospitalized and die from these drugs. The government, communities, schools and public centers must also make it a priority to really counterattack the popularity of these drugs within are youth and help steer us in the right direction. This situation resembles times in the past where new and dangerous drugs have consumed Americans, creating a dangerous situation for those who become addicted to them.

Only Female Faces in the Chamber After the Big Storm--Becca Brandt 4th Period
On Tuesday, January 26th, there was a short meeting of the Senate in the morning. This was the first meeting after the huge snow storm in the North-East. Lisa Murkowski, Republican Senator, looked around the room and noticed that there was not one male in the room. The women were brave enough to show up in the bad weather, the men were not. While addressing the rest of the women, Murkowski says "...you look around the chamber, the presiding officer is female. All of our parliamentarians are female. Our floor managers are female. All of our pages are female."
To me, this is ironic. It is ironic because before World War I, the jobs of women were to cook, clean, watch the children, and clean some more. During wars, women would get to take over some heavier jobs, but in World War I, women actually got to fight, in a way, for America. They got to work as nurses in the war. They also got to finally take over factory jobs for good. When men returned from war, they were looking for work because a lot of women actually got to keep their jobs this time. It is ironic because now, over 100 years later, men are the ones who do not work. Of course it was their choice to not show up to work, but women have always been referred to as the weaker sex, but these women were brave enough to go out into the storm to attend work because they care about their jobs enough to do that.

Flint residents protest high bills for "poison" water-Katherine Flores
Summary: Flint Residents are currently being billed for water that they can't even use for drinking or bathing due to possible lead-contamination. They have been protesting against this situation with burning papers and ripping up water bills. Fire Stations have offered to give free water bottles and filters to the residents since this is the only way they won't get infected.
Analysis: I think this is outrageous. The fact that these people can't use their own water, but still have to pay the expensive bill at the end of the month is not fair. They should remove the bill or at least reduced the price. Although, I can understand that it is money that is needed for the city, I don't get why they can't find some solution to the problem instead of pretending it doesn't exist. That is just despicable on their part and is also disappointing to see. I would've hoped that by now the government could stop trying to ignore the problems they have and pushing them away as if they don't exist. On a larger scale, this same problem was seen in the Gilded Age. Problems were shoved under the rug, no questions asked and it wasn't until the Spanish American War ended, America finally focused their attention on the domestic chaos the country was in.

Trump Skipping GOP Debate (Bella Di Fazio pd:8)
Trump has stated that he will miss the upcoming GOP debate on Fox mainly due to the reason of the feud between him and the Fox network treatment towards him. Instead of attending the debate, Trump has decided to host an event in Iowa to raise money for wounded warriors and veterans.
This in a way is kind of a strategic move to skip the debate because if Fox gets on to him they'll be painted as the bad guy for trying to disrupt his fundraiser. However, skipping an important debate like this is crucial to his campaign. (Don't get me wrong, him failing would be very nice.) Also, Trump thinks people should grow up because being politically correct isn't important to him, but then throws a fit when he can't get his way.
In a way, Trump is kind of like the big political bosses during the Gilded Age where they are super rich but also highly problematic but have good strategies of covering up their flaws to make them look more like respectable businessmen.

In a way, Trump is kind of like the big political bosses during the Gilded Age where they are super rich but also highly problematic but have good strategies of covering up their flaws to make them look more like respectable businessmen.

Trump stays out of Fox -- Robert Swofford
Well, it's freedom of speech and with that you're allowed to not talk at all, or at least on certain newscasters. Trumps is unconventional and a little loony but at least he knows who the loons in the media are and to stay away from them, aka Fox News
Six Cleveland Police Officers fired after Use of excessive force By: Luis Ceja
After Investigating both the chase and the final shooting. Where the car was shot 132 times. Which is way to many obviously. The man in the car was shot would end up dying. This Investigation has taken 2 years which is ridiculous. They did finally come to the conclusion that the use of force was unessesarry which is a no brainer. There is no situation in which fire 132 shots into a civilian vehicle is ok. That alll aside here's the details. One officer at a previous time was charged with involuntary manslaughter but was equitted. Which is ridiculous that he goes unpunished for such a crime. Then 6 officers were fired with many more on administrative leave. Now that's all fine but there's more to this story a group or union for the cops said they will be rehired that this firing of officers was an injustice. There leader said the media has influenced this case and that the came to an emotional conclusion not a reasonable one. He does realize this took 2 years so I'm pretty sure there thourough and reasoned. Second your a union and I know you protect workers but you should never protect bad ones. Thank You
Mass shooting planned -Kennedy Park prd 4
23 year old Milwaukee resident arrested and charged for attempting to kill people at a masonic temple. Samy Mohamed Hamzeh was arrested because he was recorded planning out how he was going to achieve his goal of murdering 30 or more people in this temple. The article goes on to talk about his religion which is Muslim and how he was "defending Islam."
I think it's crazy the amount of attention that these articles get. I absolutely hate that this article mostly talks about his religion and that he was "defending Islam." I hear about it every day on the news that soon we're all going to be dead because ISIS is going to "kill us all" and that we're being over run like the Nazis did with the lobster effect. Yes there is a crazy group of people that would like to do harm to Americans and yes we should be afraid of them and yes we should try to stop them. But now this feeling of being afraid is overrunning our daily lives and causing us to look and want to treat a group of Americans differently because of it. This was one man out of millions. This CNN story is similar to the yellow pages in that they blow up a story hoping to get more views on it when all they're really doing is just causing more fear and anger in the world than there already was.

Halting the spread of Zika into the United States

Well, The United States are faced with a new virus that's known as Zika, your probably wondering what is Zika and how did it get into the United States? Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. This virus began in Brazil people from Brazil enter the U.S unawaire of the virus. Professor Charged For Assaulting Student Journalist During UM Protest --Madeleine Norton, 4th period
This morning a Missouri college professor, Melissa Click, was charged with third-degree assault for "scuffling with a journalist" (Schierbecker) during a November protest demonstration over "perceived racial issues". Apparenlty the student was attempting to film the squad but upon noticing him, the professor wished to shoo him out for promoting and filming.
Fox News published the story, stating "The video, which was quickly posted to YouTube, showed Click confronting videographer Mark Schierbecker during a campus protest on Nov. 9 and apparently trying to block him from shooting video on a public quad. At one point, Schierbecker asks to speak with Click, who promptly tells him to leave.
'No, you need to get out,' she says, pointing away and then seeming to grab Schierbecker’s camera. 'You need to get out. You need to get out.'
When Schierbecker refuses to leave, Click yells to a group of nearby demonstrators: 'Who wants to help me get this reporter out of here? I need some muscle over here.'"
This could be considered an assault against free speech and the freedom of the press, so it's understandable as to why she might have been issued this degree. It seems especially shocking to some because of the racially degrading manner the situation surrounded, what with the protest and school issues. However, is it right the woman should be charged with third-degree assault? Or is it possible there was a different side to the story as to why the student and professor acted the way they did.

Jillian Linnear P.8 | Inmates Escape Jail
Summary
This article was about three inmates in a California jail who escaped by cutting through their quarter-inch steel plates, then using plumbing tunnels and finally using their bed sheets to get down five stories. The three inmates had all one thing in common and that was, that they all were in jail for murder or at least attempted murder. Police say, that these men are extremely dangerous and that any information leading to their arrest will be awarded with fifty-thousand dollars.
Reason
The article was written to inform people that there are dangerous men on the loose, and that anything that will help will be awarded.
Connection
This escape can be connected to the Libby Prison Escape in 1864 during the American Civil War, as they share similarities. One of the similarities being that multiple people escaped, three in this case, and in the Libby Prison Escape one hundred plus escaped. Another similarity that can be seen is that in both escapes they used plumbing tunnels to help them in their escape.

Obama: Why we must rethink solitary confinement. Natalia Hernandez 9th period.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/barack-obama-why-we-must-rethink-solitary-confinement/ar-BBoH1Js?li=BBnb7Kz
Kalef, a 16 year old accused of stealing a purse, spent almost 2 years in solitary confinement and was released never having stood trial. Struggling to recover from the trauma he commited suicide at 22 years old. Since the 1800's solitary confinement has been gaining popularity. But the psychological consequences are devastating. "In our criminal justice system, the punishment should fit the crime — and those who have served their time should leave prison ready to become productive members of society. How can we subject prisoners to unnecessary solitary confinement, knowing its effects, and then expect them to return to our communities as whole people? It doesn’t make us safer. It’s an affront to our common humanity" Barack Obama has said.
These kinds of issues are linked in American history as far back as the creation of the bill of rights where the 6th amendment protects our right to a speedy and public trial, and where excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. Solitary confinement is a damaging blow, often irreparable, to the human physique. It's always struck me as the embodiment of utter despair. So when Obama words this very logical argument, I can't help but to agree, really. The trauma often renders those who have served their time in prison unable to re-adjust to society. Must we evaluate the fundamental purpose of prison? Is it to break the prisoners out of spite for their crimes, meanwhile pouring money into the system in order to mantain it, only to watch them walk away and soon die? Should the purpose not be to give these people a chance to atone for their crime and employ the possibility of giving back to the community afterwards? Especially juvieniles, who are in question here. We have yet much to offer if we can be averted from the wrong path. But breaking a teen's mind serves no purpose, at least not a practical one.

Eleanor E-W, 5th period Banksy mural
Banksy is at it again, this time with a mural beside the French embassy in London, criticizing European authorities treatment of refugees in refugee camps. The image looks like the poster of Les Mis, but the girl has tears in her eyes and is being engulfed by tear gas. This is commentary on the French authorities alleged use of teargas against refugees.
I think this mural is interesting--it shows how art can really convey a strong message. The allusion to Les Mis also makes it interesting. This kind of reminds me of the political cartoons people have made through out history--pictures that make a point, or clearly state the artists opinion on a particular topic.

Luz Lopez(4th period)- Watching cute cat videos is instinctive and good for you--seriously
Most of the time we can't resist seeing a cute animal video. Either if it's a baby panda sneezing or a tiny hamster eating tiny food. Our love for these cute little furballs may be a matter of survival. Scientists have found that humans are attracted to features that are similar to a baby. It depends on us to take care of our young. Many scientists believe we have developed this to survive.
I found this article very interesting. I find animals in general cute. This reminded me when people mostly preferred the white babies in commercials instead of a colored baby.

Young Asylum-Seeker stabs Refugee Worker to Death-Molly Mitchell 5th
Summary:
A boy, believed to be 15, stabbed a Swedish woman to death in an asylum-seeker home. The boys identity is currently unknown and the stabbing is not considered terrorist related at this time. Out of the eight young male residents of the house, all of different country origins, only one is believed to be involved in the stabbing of this 22 year old refugee worker, although multiple translators must be brought in to translate all of the boys before anything is conclusive.
Analysis:
It is a terrible tragedy that this would happen, especially in a country as safe as Sweden. But this does bring some parallels and questions to how Americans would react should this had happened on our soil. A refugee with no name and backstory stabbing a woman to death would only fuel the fires of fear and rage that every person seems to be giving into these days.

3 men escape prison By: Emma Wall
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/25/us/california-jail-escape/index.html
The article above discusses the escape of three men. They escaped the Orange County Jail on Friday. The article states that all of the men who escaped are very dangerous. The article also states that their escape plan was very sophisticated and well planned. They are offering a huge cash price for anyone who gives information that will help authorities capture them.
This is crazy. After reading this article I was very shocked because I figured that someone would know that they were up to something. I am very surprised that there was no security there when they broke out. It is actually very frightening to know that there are three very dangerous men on the loose. Hopefully the officials find them soon before they commit any other crimes.

Oscars Boycott // Uriel Cruz, Period 6
"What's old, white, and male? No, the answer is not Santa Claus. Or the Republican Party. The answer is Hollywood." -Cristal Wright, last Friday.
After another year of purely white Oscar nominations, some black actors have decided to just not go.
The list of black actors who are boycotting includes Spike Lee, Will Smith, and his wife Jada Pinkett. Pinkett decided to not go after finding out Concussion hadn't earned Smith a seat at the Oscars. Although Concussion wasn't actually that bad, other movies like The Revenant, Inside Out, and Mad Max: Fury Road did way better and stole Will's spot. Movies like Creed and Straight Outta Compton have been nominated but the award doesn't celebrate any black actor's performance. It's really going to be a rough night. As long as Chris Rock doesn't do anything Ricky Gervais would do, I think it'll be an ok broadcast.
This boycott reminds me of when laborers would go on strike and demand better work conditions. Unfortunately, The Man is the one in charge and there's nothing either of them can do. I don't think the law should get involved with the Oscars thing though; not getting nominated really isn't as bad as the laborers' conditions. The laborers were forced to work in dangerous and unfair conditions, black actors just weren't picked. I do think that the 2016 class should be more diverse so a variety of actors from all backgrounds have the same chance of getting nominated as everyone else. The Oscars have kind of become an all white thing and it's really not cool, but boycotting probably isn't the way to go.

People Behind Planned Parenthood Videos Indicted Emily Rosuck 4th
We all know about the Planned Parenthood videos: An organization called the Center for Medical Progress allegedly had meetings with official member of Planned Parenthood discussing the harvesting and sale of fetal tissue and organs. In the US, it is legal to use fetal tissue for research, but not for profit. This put Planned Parenthood under a huge fire and even led to the De-Fund Planned Parenthood movement.
After a lengthy investigation, not only did Texas government find that Planned Parenthood had no wrongdoing, but they ended up indicting David Daleiden and Sandra Meritt, two anti-abortion activists who were the masterminds behind the fraudulent videos. Daleiden, who was the founder of the Center for Medical Progress, was also charged with violating a prohibition on the purchase and sale of human organs. People broke the law in order to spread malicious lies about Planned Parenthood when in reality, the only crime done were those who were behind the accusations.
The acknowledgment of Planned Parenthood as a legitimate, law abiding organization is a huge step for Texas government. In such a Republican state, it's hard to find our politicians advocating women's reproductive rights, especially terminating a pregnancy. But this week justice was finally served, those who did the crime were indicted and condemned while Planned Parenthood remains.

Kicked to the Curb: GOP Replaces NBC with CNN for February Debate

Debates from the candidates for this 2016 election are very popular and should be seen by everyone. CNN is not broadcasting the debate in Houston which is very strange for them not to broadcast it specifically there. I feel as if the first amendment is being violated which is freedom of speech.
Also Cruz commented that the questions being asked where, "inaccurate[...]downright offensive."

Rookie Jameis Winston has taken Tom Brady's Pro Bowl spot after Brady declined to play in the game. Against all odds I came up with brilliant synthesis to american history.
Analysis: This reminds me of the election of 1912. Teddy Roosevelt very easily could have won the election, just as Brady earned his spot in the pro bowl. however Roosevelt stayed true to his word that he would not run for a third consecutive term. It just so happens Brady has been in consecutive pro bowls as well ;) Both Taft and Winston would not have become enshrined in their perspective positions had their peers no opted to sit out of the competition.

Protests outside Phoenix, Arizona school, Desert Vista , After Racial Slur Photos
By:Tristin Manus 8th
Analysis: It's 2016. This is the epitome of white privellege and white superority. First of all their have been more than one instance of racial incidents at Desert Vista highschool, but no punishment for the students wrong doings. RACISM HAS NEVER LEFT. It's is intuitionalized, systematic and taught within the homes of these students. Racism is a learned behavior. Now how can some racist white girls get away with brodcasting racial slurs on their shirts but a Muslim boy was ASSUMED to have a bomb, interrogated and taken into custody because of assumptions. How can they get little to no punishment for their consequences and there are black kids who are dehumanized, killed, assaulted etc, JUST FOR BEING BLACK. A black eighth grader was sent to the principal's office because her natural hair was too "poofy" and "unprofessional". Black people have face ( and still do) so much discrimination just for our skin color. This is why #blacklivesmatter, for the type of incidents like this.

McDonalds up on the charts -Avery Yoss
Ever since Steve Easterbrook has become CEO for McDonald's it has been nothing but good news for everyone there. His most recent idea, to keep the breakfast menu all day, has been such a hit it even made the news. McDonald's is making a comeback with everyone's favorite breakfast items leading the way. McDonald's sales have been souring thanks to this brilliant idea by Easterbrook.
I think this is good thing for McDonald's and even though they are not the healthiest choice, it is a quick, cheap and easy choice for a meal. Good job Steve Easterbrook.

after east coast blizzard, the cleanup and the work begins
The snowstorms that have been hitting the east coast have reached record numbers. It's going down in history as one of the worst snowstorms of all time. People are getting stuck and the amount of fatalities is rising as well. The snowstorm can be related to the hardships the colonist faced during the winter especially during the revolution in Valley Forge where the soldiers didnt have the proper attire to be in the cold and the amount of fatalities because of the cold where pretty gruesome.

MONEY MONEY MONEY Julia Woltjen (3rd period)
SUMMARY:
A group of co-workers recently went in on the Powerball and pooled their money together. One of the tickets they collectively bought won and was worth 50,000 dollars. They have split the money equally and after taxes were taken out each worker received somewhere around $1500. They were all able to take a vacation down to Salem to pick up their winnings.
ANALYSIS:
(This sounds fantastic and amazing, I hope someday my coworkers are that cool.) The lottery reminds me of the Gold vs. Silver standard because, with the silver standard there would have been more money immediately available but after a while that money would lose value. The lottery does this as well, if you win you see this amazingly large number that fools you. After taxes are taken out, this awesome number drops and leaves you with something much smaller than what you had in the beginning. Don't be fooled. (wow that took a cynical turn)
