Texting and Racism (Ashton Garcia, 2nd)

14 officers were arrested recently for exchanging racist texts and possibly arresting hundreds of people due to biased reasons, rather than a legitimate reason for an arrest. Although the texts where exchange months ago, they've finally been caught and are facing charges. Now, there's such an obvious problem with racism in the police department. One officer said that there is a "systematic problem" and that it can't just be 14 officers, but a much larger amount. It is also odd to know that these officers work for the San Fransisco Police Dep., part of a progressive city. The texts say outrageous things, calling African Americans the n word, but also calling them animals ("it's not against the law to put an animal down") including the KKK and cross burning. There's clearly a much bigger problem here, and probably around many police departments.

This has gone on way too long to finally be noticed as a "systematic problem". Innocent people are dying, and are being arrested due to bias and prejudice. Which is ironic, because officers are here to protect and help you. Why have some officers made it this far? There's something wrong with either the system, or background checks, or something. Whatever it is the police department needs to do, it needs to happen now. There are countless people who have died and been arrested even though innocent, or maybe not so innocent, but still obey the officers rules, and/or have no intention at all to hurt anyone.

  1. How can we entrust the police with our safety, when we know that they have biased opinions? This corruption has gone on for too long and technology allow us to uncover what has really been going on. Everyday those police officers with bad intentions are being exposed through cell phones, youtube, and news broadcast.

  2. The police should be here to protect, to guide, to lead. But now with corrupt ways revealed, how can we ever learn how to trust again? Once may be a mistake, but when it's repeated over and over again, it's a major problem that we need to fix.
