In 1780 Marquis de Lafayette sailed across the atlantic on the Hermione to aid George Washington in the fight for independence. This year this historic sail is being recreated. The 29 million dollar boat took almost 17 years to construct, consisting of 80 crew members most of whom are volunteers. The ship is said to have bee built exactly to the original plans, with the exceptions of a few modern adjustments for safety reasons. The Hermione is set to arrive in Yorktown, Va on June 5th where in 1781 French and American soldiers won the battle and turned the course of the war.
It is wonderful that we are reflecting on history like this, it brings attention to what we have accomplished and with whose help. The French were an important ally to the U.S. during the revolutionary war. This ship celebrates that partnership that changed the course of the New World. This is also a wonderful way to educate citizens on the history during the revolution, when it tours the mere sight of it will interest people. This will also increase little kids interest in history and it will allow them a chance to explore what came before us.

THIS IS SO COOL. It's like a flashback into the history of America. Possibly the best ever APUSH field trip.
