Racism Threatens Long Island Family by Madeline Ibarra Period 2

An African American family living in Long Island has recently received a racist letter than claimed that the family did not belong there. The letter stated that it was from the "community" and would be better for everyone in the city if they left. The people living in Lindenhurst refused to tolerate the hate crime and are working with the Suffolk County Police to find the culprit. It is horrid to see that racism at this level is quite prominent, but it is reassuring that now people are more accepting and supportive of other races and cultures.

No matter how hard we try or how well we fight it, racism exists everywhere. It is upsetting how it is continuously spread around despite all of those who work to stop it. We still have not been able to grow from our past mistakes and come together to start over. Sadly, there will always be those who do not understand one another and will refuse any sort of effort to understand.

  1. It's good to see that the police are doing something to help hunt down these people. I thought we were passed physical examples of racism, but I'm disappointed to see that we aren't. However, your negative outlook on this worries me. If we accept that racism does and always will exist in our country, why would anyone do anything to change that? We have to look ahead positively and know that we will not tolerate this and the future will hold more equal opportunities with no hatred based on skin color.

  2. I agree. We will always have those people who are unaccepting and hateful. We have come such a far way, but we still have so much more to go through. Mississippi outlawed slavery in 2013, and Alabama outlawed slavery around the same time. I of course we still have very racist places in our nation, but I really hope we go further very soon. I hope the family is able to feel free and accepted.
