Less than a month after 50 Muslim worshipers in the city of Christchurch were fatally shot in terrorist attacks on two mosques, New Zealand passed a law banning most semiautomatic weapons. The passage of the bill means temporary restrictions imposed by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern six days after the massacre, to prevent New Zealanders from stockpiling guns before the law went into effect, will now be permanent. The swift action by lawmakers stands in stark contrast to similar efforts in the United States, where nationwide gun control proposals have stalled despite a series of mass shootings in recent years.
This action is a necessity to New Zealand because of their former laws on weaponry being so vague with little restrictions. This can be related to a time where the KKK was very present. The Southern laws having little restrictions on violence against people of color and keeping slavery in tact and very much a part of their everyday life style. The looseness of laws and having no consequence for breaking them led to the hundreds of black casualties during the Civil War time. The recent events in New Zealand shadow every aspect of that sense of terror towards one specific group of people. It is causing a scare and divide within our world today. The laws being passed with hopefully have some prevention from this happening again in the future.
I think it's commendable how New Zealand has reacted to the tragedy and has already found a way to prevent it from happening again. - Madison Malonson
