Why The Times Is Covering the Caravan
Summary:The New York Times has received complaints about the mass coverage of the caravan of migrants from Central America because people believe that they are promoting the coverage to help President Trump in his midterm elections race. Many people believe that President Trump is ignoring the humanity of the situation, but instead using it as a political tactic to gain more votes for his party in the upcoming elections. The article goes on to explain how we need to look at this mass migration as what it is in Central America - a mass migration of tens of millions of people. The NY Times is covering this story because they believe that this is worth the attention, and that the political issues that are taking place in America are just another dynamic of this situation. Instead of giving President Trump the coverage that he wants, they are simply sharing the news that happens to be tied to the current president.
Analysis:
This article was written on Friday, October 26, 2018 in New York, which means that this insight into the Times is coming directly from the people in administration. I had already heard and read about the caravan on the news, but I didn't know that there was such a dynamic about the political side of it and how it could be used in the upcoming elections. This caravan relates to United States history because everyone except for the Native Americans were immigrants. For example, during the 1820's to 1930's the Irish were immigrating to America because of the lack of food (from the potato famine), lack of jobs and wealth, and diseases. This is exactly why the migrants from Central America are in the caravan. The article's audience was directly pointed at those who have been questioning the New York Times, and this is a positive influence on them, because they now know that the Times is not promoting political parties but instead covering world news. This article was written by Greg Winter, who is the deputy editor for the International division. The article was written to explain to the American people that they need to look at this not as a political tactic or mass migrations, but they need to consider the effects that come with both and how they might interconnect. This is important because we need to remember that not everything has a political effect and that we can't immediately blame someone or something for what you are perceiving as one issue, while they are promoting an entirely different one.

I don't know how the people who "believe [The New York Times is] promoting the coverage to help President Trump" arrived at this conclusion; the Times is anti-Trump.
ReplyDeleteTechnically the Indians are immigrants, too. They probably traversed the Bering Strait well ver 20,000 years ago.
