Karsyn Kelly- Family Makes Last Minute plea to keep 9-year-old on ventilator

9-year-old Payton Summons was declared brain dead at a Fort Worth, Texas, hospital. Both of her parents decided to keep her on the ventilator. The lawyer of Payton's family filed a request to extend a temporary restraining order to keep her on the machine at Cook Children's Medical Center. The order has been extended until the next Monday at 6 pm. An earlier temporary restraining order against Cook Children's Medical Center was supposed to expire Monday afternoon after Judge Melody Wilkinson denied a request last week to extend it. The parents did not want the fight to end. According to Moore, this is one of the most heartbreaking situations he's dealt with in his career.  Payton has been on the ventilator since late September, after she went into cardiac arrest from a large tumor in her chest. Payton was staying the night at her grandmothers house and she suddenly woke and, screamed to her grandma that she couldn't breathe...Then she collapsed. She was then transported to the hospital where the doctors then put her on the ventilator because she was no longer breathing. She was confirmed brain dead after a test showed no brain activity.

This story is so heartbreaking to hear... Especially since it is about a nine year old. I can't even imagine what her family is going through right now. A few years back my grandpa was in the hospital and put on ventilators, so I know how scary this experience is for this family.

  3. I agree with how sad this story is, I saw this on the news just the other day and its really upsetting that something like this would happen to such a young girl. I hope they end up figuring out a way to jeep her alive for longer. - Joziah German

  5. This brings the moral question of prolonged life support. As an adult people can generally sign wavers stating wether they would like to be put on life support and for how long. But in the case of a child that responsibility is put on the parents even though their judgement may be impaired do to their recent tragedy.
