Chloe Meinershagen - Student's Opinion on College, Homework, Loneliness?

This article interviewed highschoolers on questions surrounding college.
For the cost of college, many students think that the price is out of hand. These days college is about the cost more than the education. One suggested providing more scholarships for academics because that shows the drive and work ethic that would help those students that do not apply to the need based scholarships but would not like student loan. When asked about loneliness most students had experienced the feeling, but know that loneliness will pass with time and you have to not to blame yourself. When asked how social media effects this, some think social media intensifies loneliness, making you feel more alone, while others think it connects you to pervious friends. Lastly, students were asked about homework and parent's involvement. Most agree that they can help, but shouldn't do your homework for you.

This essay is very interesting to me considering I am about to go to college in the next two years. My prior knowledge on this subject is based on my personal experience and perceptions. I agree that college is way too expensive, and at this point if you're not in top 1% of Americans you will have student loan that may follow you for decades. I don't know how to get schools to lower the pricing, but I do think that allowing for more scholarships based on your academics is a really good idea. I know there is national merit scholarship for the SAT and PSAT, but as far as I know, which is not much, there is a lot of need base money provided which doesn't apply to me enough, but it definitely helpful for others, and not much else for those who seem to be able to pay full price of college. I can compare the cost of college to the capitalism of religious holidays. Christmas was a christian holiday that was originally celebrated as the "birth of Jesus Christ". Currently, the economic side has taken over the true point, similar to college becoming about cost more than education, and no longer are the majority of Christmas celebrators thinking about anything other than gifts, toys, food, and things businesses love to tap into to make lots of money.

  1. I agree, college is extremely expensive, especially when we come from a free public education. Not only do colleges take into account your work ethic, but also your grades, SAT scores, volunteer hours, extracurricular activities, and even your race! These can all manipulate the amount of money you spend on college, and sometimes, it can be WAY too much!

  2. I agree with what you said about increasing scholarships based on academics. It's upsetting that college is so expensive and many people are unable to attend due to this. Everyone deserves an education, and students the age of 17 and 18 shouldn't be stressing over where they're gonna find thousands of dollars so that they can go.

  3. I agree with all of y'all. There are people out there with brilliant minds that are held in chains by their empty wallets. The cost of college has always been a little too much in my opinion, as John Mulaney explained how he had to pay 120,000 for a full four years of college, which nowadays having a Bachelor's degree or higher is the only way to really get far in life.
