California Passes More Gun Laws-Ariana Oliver

After the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida earlier this year, gun control legislation was highly sought after. Gov. Jerry Brown signed several gun control bills. One law states that you have to be 21 to purchase a rifle  or shotgun, with the exception of hunters, police officers and members of the military, in the state of California. The legislature said that he was thinking about the incident in Parkland when he introduced this law. Sen. Anthony J. Portantino  believes that California should be the leader when Washington isn’t. He says that no parent should have to worry about a gun getting into the wrong hands. Many of the other gun laws will consist of the following: ban anyone with domestic violence misdemeanors from possessing a firearm for life, require 8 hours of gun safety training for anyone applying for a concealed gun permit, and the police is allowed to ask for a gun violence restraining order verbally.

The NRA opposed these laws, especially the one about raising the minimum age from 18 to 21 for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun. The NRA filed a suit against Florida for passing a similar law, and now they're thinking of pursuing this same action against California. They said this law violated the 2nd amendment.
I disagree with the NRA because nobody was using the 2nd amendment as an excuse when the Safe Streets Act and Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed: raises the age to purchase handguns from a federally licensed dealer to 21. I feel like they're blocking us from making a change for gun control, especially since Florida's bill was spearheaded by young adults affected by the former shootings.
