California High School Students Line Up to Spell Out Racial Slur at Senior Picnic -Martina D'Orso

In Escondido High School in Southern California, students lined up to form a racial slur for a photo. The 10 students were seniors at the high school where they attended an event where people could write out words with shirts. The words students use are usually approved beforehand, but some students take pictures with their own new words after. The students are facing consequences and the police are investigating the incident; however, the school has said that this doesn't align with their values so their actions will have repercussions.

Prior to reading the article, I did not know anything about this subject, but this does not affect my interpretation of the article nor my understanding of it. This article was written for people catching up on the news, or people worried or interested about how racism is taking a role in our country. It is a negative influence on the people reading the article because it shows how racism is still alive in our country. The article was written to inform people about events that are going on in our world, highlighting racism, or just pure ignorance that occurs in our country. The article is important because it showcases how people still do not fully understand the effects of racism, nor how it still has not disappeared from our society in the least. In the US past, we have experienced many uses of racial slurs in things such as propaganda to signs on restaurants. Especially during the time of the Civil Rights Movement, there were signs that prohibited people of color from doing simple actions in the same environments as whites and calling them harmful names. Nearly 60 years later we are still experiencing the same racism, even if it is to a less intense extent, and while we are still trying to persecute those who make hate crimes many go undetected and without consequences. On another note, even if their intentions were not racist their ignorance does not excuse them from their actions nor does it excuse them from any penalties they will and should receive.
