Described as a serial killer who hunted for his victims, a US Border Patrol agent was arrested after being connected to the deaths of 4 people and kidnapping a woman. Juan David Ortiz, 35, confessed to killing 4 people between September 3rd and September 15th and is charged with murder and one unlawful restraint with aggravated assault. Ortiz was accused of killing Melissa Ramirez, Claudine Ann Luera, a woman referred to as Jane Doe, and John Doe. All of them prostitutes, Ortiz seemed to be profiling certain kinds of victims. As this investigation continues, it is told that the agency is fully cooperating with investigators, and they say criminal action by their employees is not, and will not be tolerated. Andrew Meehan, spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection said, "Out of respect for the victims' family and friends, we ask that deference and due process be given to the investigation so that all the facts are brought to light and they can receive the closure they deserve." The case broke Friday when a woman was reportedly kidnapped and escaped. The victim called the police and provided full detail of his tattoo where they ended up founding him 160 miles southwest hiding in the bed of a pickup truck at the Ramada Inn hotel. Now in custody, Ortiz will never hurt someone again.
This article was produced Saturday morning September 15th by CNN's Ed Lavandera and Amir Vera. This was the same day Ortiz was put in custody after killing 4 and kidnapping another. Prior to this article, I had no knowledge about this investigation which I think this is a problem since there was a person classified as a serial killer running around. I was stunned to hear that someone who had served in the military and is now a US Border Patrol agent would do such a thing. This type of event reminds of the Ariel Castro cases in 2013 where he had kidnapped 3 women for 10 years and did terrible things to them until one was able to escape. This article was most likely written to inform south Texas of a US Border Patrol agent who went off on a mass killing and was found 2 weeks later. I think it's a little scary to hear about this 3 weeks after he had been running around inflicting havoc. The authors Ed Lavandera and Amir Vera point of view and purpose on this article probably was this event had to be published to the public so they know of this serious killer that was in some peoples neighborhoods. This article is important because it tells Americans there are still very sick people in this world who are killing people whenever they want. I think it is indeed a probably that it took almost 2 full weeks and 4 killings for police to be brought into this search and investigation of Ortiz. Hopefully, in the future, people will inform the police of matters they see, and the police will get to discovering individuals like Ortiz long before they kill people.
