Throughout the many years, footwear companies have been making and selling shoes while gaining money, they are now becoming intertwined in the messy tangle of political, racial and cultural clashes surrounding the Trump administration. Nike took this long path as its most significant representatives like, LeBron James and Serena Williams, have both taken a stance about the police shootings of African American men. These athletes and a few others are now using their shoes to make a statement. Statements shoes have a big chance of becoming more common after the NBA relaxes the rules over the types of shoe players can wear. When the NFL allowed players to follow Kaepernick's decision to kneel during the national anthem to protest police shootings of African-Americans, Trump was not happy. Now the president has turned against Nike, for making Kaepernick the face for its 30-year campaign. Nike is taking the side of its athletes with the sacrifice of losing many buyers. They want to be on the same page as their athletes, consumers, and history itself. This article was published September 9, 2018. I believe this article is relevant because shows the public how standing up for what you believe in is okay and good. The author wrote this for America's youth to show Nike taking a stand for what they believe in.

I think it's important that people have the right to have peaceful protests, even if that means taking a knee at football games. That's what makes us a democratic society; the athletes aren't causing riots, but they are bringing attention to the fact that there is still an issue with the mistreatment of African-Americans in our society. It keeps the conversation alive without being violent. I don't think it is right for President Trump to boycott Nike; it is a peaceful protest. - Chloe Meinershagen
ReplyDeleteI think that Colin Kaepernick has made a huge difference already and Nike is showing that their slogan is what they go by. I am glad to see that people are taking advantage of their platform in a good way to stand up for what they believe in and for the people who don't have a huge platform to do so.
