Serena Williams calls out sexism-Daviah Harrison
On September 8,2018, Serena Williams lost the Gland Slam showdown to Naomi Osaka, the first Japanese player to win a Grand slam. Even though this did hurt Serena, she had other issues. She now has to pay $17,000 for three code violations.Serena argues that the umpire, Carlos Ramos, was being sexist and(Serena) claims that it's the reason she has 3 violations. The first violation was because her coach admitted to coaching her from the stands after she had gotten a warning for it, the second was for smashing and breaking her tennis racket, and the third on was for verbal abuse to the umpire after calling him a "thief". Serena felt like this was sexism since she has seen guys get away with saying worst things in their matches.
This shows that even though we have had many woman break barriers in women history, gender equality still has ways to go. I feel like these violations are not fair and other tennis players like John Mcenroe have gotten away with outburst on the tennis court. Also, Serena explains that men get away with saying "several things" and never get penalized for it. This makes me realize that we have ways to go when it comes to how we treat each other in this world. I am glad to see that someone like Serena Williams is standing up for what she believes in and is making a difference in the world.

ReplyDeleteI agree! Serena Williams speaking out is admired by other females in the same position. She's just taking the first step.

DeleteI agree, I'm glad Serena Williams is taking a stand and speaking not only for herself but for other women. It's absurd that it is 2018 and women are still fighting to be treated equally. I hope they hear out Serena and other women feel encouraged to speak up.
ReplyDeletewhen can equality become a real world that we world wide can use uuuugggh equality come please.
