"Serena Williams is calling out sexism in tennis. Here's why." https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/09/us/serena-williams-sexism-tennis-controversy/index.html
The tennis legend, Serena Williams have been dealing with a lot of sexism on the court. During her last match in the US Open, she was fined $17,000 for three different violations. She called the umpire who gave her the violations, a thief. After her loss, Williams claimed that men have called umpires worse things and never got punished. Even retired male tennis star, Andy Roddick, tweeted "I've regrettably said worse and I've never gotten a game penalty." Also, in Serena's first match since her childbirth, she was dress coded for wearing a catsuit outfit. The French Open didn't even have a dress code before she wore the form fitting outfit. Giudicelli, the French Tennis Federation President, said "One must have respect for the game and the place." Needless to say people were not happy. Actress, Elizabeth Banks tweeted, "The amount of control men feel the need to exert over women is petty-level with this one."
I definitely was very upset when I read the story, but not surprised. Even though we have made great strides in the equality of men and women, we still very far to go. This article goes to show that women are still being controlled by their every step, by men. It hasn't even been a hundred years since women got the right to vote! I am so glad that women and men are calling out sexism in all walks of life. Hopefully in the years to come we will make a lot more progress.
I think it is important that she brought up the topic of sexism in sports because i feel that not many people ever think about it, so it’s good that she brought some more awareness to the issue.
