Rise of LGBTQ Candidates -Cleo Chaney

Many LGBTQ candidates, in addition to African American, Native American, and female candidates, are running in political races this year, in comparison to years past. There is a total of 430 LGBTQ people who ran/are running for office at every level this year. In the current climate, with Trump trying to ban transgender people from serving in the military and advocating for religious freedom laws which allow businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ people, many feel they are needed in positions of power. As of right now, there is only 1 senator and 6 house members who are a part of the LGBTQ community.

2018 is making history for its diverse candidates, and there were years like this one in the past marked by similar progress. 1992 was labelled "The Year of the Woman" because of the record number of women elected to Congress. Compared to the number of woman running and serving in office today, the 1992 number seems small, but that gives me hope that in 25 years the amount of LGBTQ and minority candidates will have similarly increased.

  1. I definitely agree that people in the government should represent the population. I also didn't realize it was so limited in our legislature!

  2. I never knew about the increase of the LGBT community running for political power! I also agree that more members of the LGBT community and minorities should be encouraged to run and represent the population.

  3. Learning that the LGBT community has grown a lot within the political leadership the US has, shows that it’s slowly becoming more and more accepted. Without people, such as trump, trying to degrade the LGBT community, the world is more likely to accept it as well bc people follow their leaders.
