Rachel DuBard- More teens would rather text their friends than hang out IRL

In a recent study, it was discovered that more teens would rather text their friends than speak to them in person. Two good points were brought up, how distracting smartphones are and the relationship between the smartphones and sleep. As a teen I would like to say that smartphones are indeed distracting and have kept me from going to sleep within a decent hr. Sadly texting is now teens’ communication method of choice. I personally would way rather talk to somebody in person because it’s more real and you aren’t getting the truth of a person through social media. Apparently, teens feel insecure talking to people in person and interacting in real life is risky. Teens also find that social media helps to connect them with their friends and such. As danah boyd says, teens are not addicted to technology, they are addicted to each other.

  1. I totally get where you’re coming from and I completely agree. I so much prefer conversing face to face as opposed to talking to someone through a screen. I would love to hear you connect this topic with a historical issue.

  2. Phones do indeed disrupt sleep, that's why I keep my phone outside in my living room and go to sleep at curfew so I get a good night's rest!

  3. I can understand both sides but, I would rather talk face to face. I think when texting you can misunderstand certain situations and eye contact is a big way of getting the point across.

  4. I understand both sides of the situation. I do think that technology is a great way of communicating with friends and society when you are not able to talk to them in person. I too use my phone in the evening to text my friends and spend time on social media, and I don't think this has a negative impact on my life. However when I spend too much time on my phone in the night, it disrupts my sleep, so I always keep my phone across my bedroom where it is not tempting me.
