Nike's Colin Kaepernick campaign causes people to freak out! -Grecia Jimenez

Nike made former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick the face of its latest advertising campaign, he is known for kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality against African-Americans. Many have shown their opposition by burning, cutting, and destroying their Nike sportswear. However, many have shown support to Nike and Kaepernick by going out and buying a new pair of the brand's sneakers. Other people have resorted to social media to express their opinions on the situation. Marcia Loverdi tweeted "Will kneel for social injustices any day of the week rather than stand for intolerance and bigotry," The reason behind all the controversy is racist people disagreeing with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and somehow protesting by destroying their belongings. In fact, even Donald Trump had opposed the decision of NFL players to kneel during the national anthem and believes that the campaign sends a "terrible message".
In my personal view, people are really overeacting by litterally destroying their shoes. The majority of the people "boycotting" Nike are Caucasian folks who don't live with the fear of them or a relative getting killed for their skin color  by the people who are supposed to be protecting them. The #BLM movement was not made with the purpose to oppress, but to bring awareness to the police brutality affecting this community and Nike is not doing anything wrong by supporting Kaepernick and other NFL players. Yes, people reserve the right to disagree, but the way they are showing it is downright disrespectful and inconsiderate of the millions of people fighting for their lives and the lives of their Black relatives.

  1. I definitely agree that the actions of those who are burning shoes don't really make sense. Why are they threatened by support for a campaign meant to help a victimized group? Personally, I think they feel that their status in America is undermined by the support for the BLM movement.

  2. I agree people are taking it too far. I feel the reason why people are burning their shoes is because they think his protest against the pledge and what the believe in is diected towards them, but it is completely the opposite. He is standing up (by sitting down) against police brutality and the killing of unarmed black men or any person of color.

  3. I agree that people are taking it too far with the destruction of their Nike merchandise. Like Kennedy said, they are feeling needlessly threatened by a campaign. Kaepernick never protested veterans. He protested police brutality.

  6. The fact that people are literally destroying perfectly good items, that they could of donated is just stupid! Also, the fact that they were threatened so much by someone who is standing up to acknowledge the fact that a whole race is being targeted for no reason, really grinds my gears. If you don't agree with something, you shouldn't do something as burning your shoes.
