Mekinna Knight- Hunting? Yay or Nay

The recent event that I will be discussing today talks about a man and his right to hunt.  34 year old former NHL player, Tim Brent, has received many nasty hateful comments (including death threats) regarding his recent hunting trip in which he hunted a grizzly bear. Very proud of his accomplishment, ( someone with a hunting license can only hunt a grizzly ever 3 years), he posted a picture on Instagram explaining what he had done and how cool he thought it was. There is no actual harm in any of these actions, but of course there has to be those environmentalists who rightly have their beliefs also, there to call him out. There were comments regarding how disgusting and awful he was. There were also some as gruesome as ones that said they hoped the next bear he encountered would eat him from the feet up. His wife, Eva Shockey-Brent (also a very big hunter), went out on her own personal social media to defend her husband by asking the haters to back off. All in all, Brent was not in the wrong for anything he did at all, and i'm definitely sure it will not be his last hunting trip. People who disagree with his choices are just going to have to learn to ignore his actions, or continue to react them which would not be beneficial for either parties.

This can be similarly connected to a story from July of 2015 regarding the possible illegal beheading of a lion, which dentist, Walter Palmer, paid a pretty penny ($55,000) to achieve. Reportedly, Palmer says he believed everything he was doing was legal, and that he had no idea how much this lion, Cecil, had meant to this community until after the hunt. He did regret his actions, although he did very much still value the hunt of big-game.

  1. Chloe Meinershagen - Hunting is a very controversial topic at the moment. Although it doesn't surprise me the hate he has been given, I also think that there are harsher industries that are treating animals with even more cruelty, such as the Food Industry. Hunters are still doing harm, but at least the animal is allowed to live in the wild, and when it's killed it is very quick and less painful. I still think hunting should be lessened, but I believe we should focus our attention to other, worse animal cruelty.

  2. Hunting can be harmful but in moderation and under restrictions it isn’t that big of a cause of environmental instability. I would rather have people hunting with licenses than being restrained and trying to hunt unmonitored. As Chloe stated we should be focusing on the industries that deal more directly and more intensely with animal cruelty instead of trying to stop individuals.

  3. I dont think it was okay for the guy to be showing off his hunting as if he won the lottery due to how controversial hunting is. There's no shock to me for the hate he's been receiving, but I agree with Daniella and prefer to have people hunt under strict rules and setbacks than having them wipe out whole animal populations for fun. -adriana chavez
