Lex Willis- Police officer arrested after shooting a man in his own apartment

Thirty-year-old Amber Guyger shot twenty-six-year-old Botham Shem Jean on September 6, 2018. Police say that Guyger entered Jean's apartment in downtown Dallas, thinking it was hers and shot Jean. She called 911 right after, and Botham died in the hospital later that day. There is suspicion on what Jean's mental state was and what might have caused her to mistake Jean's apartment for her own. Critics say that Guyger was given special treatment from officials since she is one of their own. They held off arresting her with a manslaughter charge for three days. However, on Sunday evening, Guyger turned herself in at  Kaufman Country Jail. Guyger has not received her final charges yet, but she could be charged for either 1st-degree murder or second-degree manslaughter. Dallas Chief Reneeé Hall says that they don't know whether race was a part in Jean's death. Botham's family continues to grieve.
Kristine Phillips wrote this article and published on September 10 at 9:21 am. This incident reminds me of the shooting of Harith Augustus, who was a 37-year old man shot on July 14, 2018, in Chicago. Augutus was shown in footage, opening his wallet then reaching for his holster. Police surrounded him and shot him when he attempted to flee. People close to Augustus said, "He treated people with respect and simply wanted to live a life of peace and quiet." Both families lost somebody important to them.
