Koko Chen / A Debate Over Rational Suicide

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/31/health/suicide-elderly.html?action=click&module=Editors%20Picks&pgtype=Homepage

This article talks about how many people nowadays think suicide is a rational way to die. Many argue that people should be more open to the idea of someone taking their own life away. The article mostly talks about elderlies and how many of them don't want to die in the hospital connected to tubes and laying on  their own deathbed awaiting for death, which is why they take their own lives.

I personally do not think that suicide should be rationified, and when we know of someone that wants to kill themselves we shouldn't encourage them to do it, but instead try to help them with it because no matter what life is precious and there is a way  to get over everything no matter how tough or hard it seems to be in there moment.

  1. As someone who has struggled with depression, I agree that life is precious. However I do think we should look into providing elderly people with chronic diseases and declining health (especially those in hospice) with access to therapy and antidepressants.

  2. the roughest thing someone can do too in these situations is guilt these people and get angry at them. Telling someone suicidal that they have no reason to be that way is the epitome of ignorance and selfishness.

  3. I do agree with you Koko. When you are having suicidal thoughts, you should seek help. There are probably so many people in your life willing to listen. There isn't really a rational reason for someone to kill themselves.
