Jordan Gillette- FBI arrest 5 adults keeping children in a compound in New Mexico

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45380235

Summary: On September 1st, 2018, five adults were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of firearms by an illegal immigrant, and aiding and abetting in the committing of an offense. The five had been under surveillance by FBI drones ever since May. The FBI raided the compound the accused were inhabiting north of Taos, New Mexico in early August looking for a missing three-year-old named Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, only to find his remains and 11 other starving children. Wahhaj was killed unintentionally; he suffered from seizures his whole life, but the five perceived the seizures as possession and looked to exorcism the end his misery. The five adults were originally granted bail, but protests and death threats to the judge quickly changed that factor. This case is controversial because on the prosecutor's side, they emphasize the fact that even though the boy was killed unintentionally, he is still dead, and that there were also 11 starving children in the compound and extensive evidence of possession of firearms. However, on the defensing side, many believe that the prosecutors are treating the case unfairly because the defendants are all African-American Muslims, and there is an underlying bias against them for that reason.

Analysis: Before reading this article, I had never heard about any of these events until I read about it on BBC news. No author was credited on the article I read. Putting racial and religious matters aside, the fact that the FBI found starving children, firearms, and the remains of a toddler in that compound is a serious issue that would be ignorant to neglect. Keeping children hostage and starving them never looks good in any scenario, and I believe that no child should be forced to starve or die, no matter how great the cost. This article was written for the general public as a way to inform them about how there may be places like that compound where people are hiding dark secrets from under our noses, and we need to become more observant as a people for signs of suspicious activity. This can be related to the Branch Davidian Waco Siege in 1993 because in both cases signs of child abuse were found all over these cases, whether they were intentional or not, they were there, and that's an issue.

  1. I agree that any case dealing with children being tortured, killed and abused should be taken seriously and shouldn’t be neglected. Whether or not it was intentional, no child should have to go through that and the culprit shouldn’t be let go free of charges.

  2. I agree that the priority in this case should finding justice for the children who were abused and tortured. I believe that regardless of who was the one who did the torturing they should be punished for their actions.

  3. I feel like race shouldn't be a factor in deciding a punishment for breaking the law. These five adults, African American Muslims or not, have starved, kidnaped, and killed these children and they should be faced in a court of law for their actions. "The justice in my American is blind"

  4. This is a very serious topic and I’m glad to see you argued for and against both sides. I also like how you picked an issue that has flown under the radar by many other news sources.
