Jordan Body-Why people are mad that Michelle Obama hugs Kanye West in Childish Gambino’s new music video

Childish Gambino's music video for his recent hit " Feels like Summer" dropped over labor day weekend and has already stirred up controversy despite its contradictory laid-back nature. The video features animated staples of the hip-hop and rap community engaging in summer activities. Though it gives off an overall chill and tranquil vibe, disputations are being made about one scene in particular; the former first lady, Michelle Obama hugging a teary eyed Kanye West in his " Make America Great Again" hat.
The backlash itself isn't surprising to see considering the rant that Kanye himself went on just months ago expressing his support of Donald Trump and how slavery itself  was a choice through Twitter. That accusation alone was disappointing from someone of the black community but more so because of the four-hundred years of slavery that he quashed so nonchalantly. Even so ( following up for his apologies for the tweets) people have been formulating theories about what the animated interaction could mean. Some speculate that it's about "the need to heal divisions in American society" or that it's just a homage to his mother who passed. Either way, Donald Glover has done it again.

  2. I think that it is terrible that someone of so much power and influence on society would say something so bad on a platform that the whole world can see. I think that this is something that should be used as an example so that others don't make the same mistakes.

  4. If Kanye hadn’t stated these ignorant claims I would not have thought anything of the animated hug. Because of recent events, I believe that this was simply a way to stir up controversy, or maybe it was really a way of showing that people of all opinions should respect and love one another.

  5. Donald Glover is a very smart man his artistic views in This is America changed the world. So I think there’s a reason he chose an huge public figure and a important woman such as Michelle Obama to be hugging Kany as a representation of something.

  6. I feel that Donald Glover is trying to send a message. But many people see it in a bad way. Maybe he was setting an example in the music video.

  7. I think the need to heal divisions in American society is a very important theme to focus on, wether or not that was the intended meaning behind the animations. I think it's a great example of the importance of evaluating any conclusions one might draw from the video, because it helps create a fuller image of its effect on society.

  8. Even though I do not agree with the comments Kanye made about slavery, I do think that Childish Gambino is trying to send a powerful message that the world may not be ready for yet.
