Joaquin Gandara: The Night Santos Rodriguez Was Killed

Much like the Jordan Edwards case, Santos Rodriguez was murdered. Forty-five years ago on July 24th, 1973 , twelve year old Santos Rodriguez was shot and killed in the back of a squad car by Officer Darrell Cain after being accused of robing a Coke machine of $8.

Officer Cain and his partner brought Santos and his older brother David to a gas station in Cedar Springs. Cain accused the two young boys, but when he didn't get the answers he wanted he pulled out his gun. He pointed the gun at the youngest of the two brothers, Santos Rodriguez. As he pointed the gun at Santos head he told him the the gun was loaded and he would tell the truth now. He then pulls the trigger. Nothing happens. He then tells Santos to tell the truth and the oldest brother says to police that his younger brothers last words were, "I am telling the truth." Cain pulls the trigger once again but this time shoots Santos in the head killing him instantly. Cain then tells the judge that he didn't know the gun was loaded and that it was an accident. Cain was sentenced 5 years in prison but only served half.
