Going Bananas | Daniella Castanheira

2 pallets of bananas, 45 boxes, were donated to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Friday and department officers quickly noticed something off with the shipment. A sergeant removed a box and, after emptying it out, found a white, powdery substance and notified port authorities. The substance tested positive for cocaine and a further search confirmed that every box was full with a total of 540 packages, totalling a street value of $18 million. The donation originated from Port of America in Freeport, Texas, but the culprit has yet to be found. Multiple federal entities are currently investigating.

Honestly this is crazy to me. The fact that somebody thought they could get away with sending this much cocaine to a prison is beyond me. I'm sure there's a precedent for it, but still. How well did they think that plan was going to go down? Drug smuggling is a big thing in today's society as people move drugs across the border without being caught, similar to back when the Navigation Acts were passed and colonists would try smuggle goods to avoid taxation.
