Elle GRinnell- Nike takes sides, tapping Colin Kaepernick for new 'just do it' ad
Colin Kaepernick ,who was a past quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers but has not played since 2016, is now the face of a new just do it ad for Nike. Many brands try to stray away from public positions especially political because they don't want to push their customers away. Kaepernick took a political stance by kneeling during the national anthem in 2016. He wanted people to open their eyes and take note of what was actually going on. The caption that is placed on the ad says "believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything" He kneeled because of what he believed in even though it had the chance to ruin is football career it started a huge movement for the people. Him starting this then brought up a huge issue as to if it was ok to use the anthem as a form of protesting or not. With him starting this movement really showed that no matter the risk he wanted to better the country. Also on a larger scale, if you really stick to something that you want it can actually make in impact for everyone not just yourself.https://money.cnn.com/2018/09/03/news/companies/colin-kaepernick-nike-just-do-it/index.html

I have heard different opinions about the intention behind this new campaign. On one hand, it could be due to economic gain after they just signed the contract with the NFL. It could just really be because they support Kaepernick and want to show that they believe in his reasons behind taking a knee. However, some people are also wondering why Nike is just now releasing the campaign when this controversy with Kaepernick is not very recent. I can see all sides to this issue but would like to believe it is because they support Kaepernick and his beliefs. Lily Philips
