The text presented the concept that the Texas Board of Education has decided to
remove historical figures Hillary Clinton and Helen Keller from mandatory history
curriculum in Texas schools. The vote was taken in attempt to lesson what
students must learn in their history classes. This was not the first time that
the board has removed historical influences from mandatory education. Five
years ago, the approval of textbooks that did not include creationism as an
alternative to the theory of evolution were delayed because of opposition from
Christian conservatives. They also chose to insert Moses as an influence on
American politics and removed the philosopher Thomas Hobbes from a section on individuals
whose principles of laws and government informed the American founding. I had
no idea of the events on the board, but I absolutely disagree with the decision.
I would love to streamline what we have to learn in school just as much as
anyone else, but I believe that the people that they have decided to eliminate
from the curriculum are very important and helped to shape our present. I believe
that this article was written for everyone, as well as to show the way that the
people in power are dictating what we know. The board is deciding our history,
which relates to the past when people have changed, bended, and molded the
truth, or when we have heard a story from only one perspective.
I agree good job
ReplyDeleteI agree and I hop the board takes into consideration what there actually doing.
ReplyDeleteI agree! The board of education seriously needs to consider what they are teaching young students. The little girls growing up and learning should know about those who came before them, and to understand role models that they may look up too.
