75 People Sentenced to Death in Egypt - Sloan Daley

An Egyptian court sentenced 75 people to death yesterday, September 8th. The reason being they participated in a pro-muslim brotherhood protest that occurred 5 years ago. Many people were killed in the security forces assault at Rabaa al Adawiya. However, the 75 who are sentenced to death were not in a simple protest. The people charged are guilty of murdering citizens and policemen, and possession of weapons. Those not sentenced to death are sentenced to prison. There is lots of controversy over this event, because some feel that the fact the police officers have not been accused of anything after the assault, is wildly unfair. The Muslim Brotherhood is now banned.

This protest makes me think of another hectic, violent rebellion in history, the Boston Tea Party. Protestors gathered to reject the last shipment of tea from the East India Company. It was violent and unexpected. It’s crazy that events that happened in 1773, are similar to what happened in 2013 at that protest.

  1. Its really crazy how a regular protest can turn into a violent one. I think its due to people getting very carried away.

  2. This is very well written and i liked your analysis. I don't think its right that the people murdered others in their protest, but it is awful how a simple protest can go very violently. -gracie zytynski
