Texas attacker tweets with terrorist Heather McKay
The gunmen, who have since been identified as Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, were roommates in Phoenix. They were caught in their plot after they drove to Texas and tried to attack a free speech event that was displaying cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. They wounded a security guard before police shot and killed them. Simpson was found to be communicating on Twitter a week before the attack with a man believed to Mohamed Abdullahi Hassan, an American who travelled to Somalia in 2008 to join the al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group al Shabaab. This is a little freaky, knowing that terrorist groups on the other side on the world still have connections within our country. I hope we stay safe and get control in the War on Terror.

That's really scary! I hope we find a way to secure ourselves from terrorism and find a way to decrease it.
ReplyDeleteThis is very scary. And the War on Terror has effected us not only politically, but socially as well. Many people in the US think of all Middle Eastern people as terrorists, or think that all Muslim and Islamic people are terrorists. Not only does this event continue that, but it continues tensions and fear.
ReplyDeleteI can see why they would be angry. Though we have free speech, the art that was being made was disrespectful towards the Islamic religion. However, resorting to violence before bringing up any disagreement about these events was not the best way to go.
ReplyDeleteIt is terrifying realizing how close it all feels. Social media truly has made a huge difference in this world. Right now, at least for the U.S. terrorism is being experienced through and because of social media. Now, the first amendment is established for a reason, but we should know better and respect other religions more intentionally. It is offensive to depict Mohammad. Though, the men who responded it violence are wrong to do so, we should at least make an effort to avoid these situations and control our side of it.
