Last Thursday, self declared independent and "democratic socialist" Bernie Sanders announced his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. He is currently a senator for Vermont. He says that he should not be underestimated. That he is not only running to push Hillary even further left or simply raise progressive issues. He is the son of a Polish immigrant, and has always championed the rights of the underdog. He is against big business and thinks that the government should help the common man. Sanders has already started to make campaign stops. One of his main points is that back in the day, Hillary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq and he didn't.
I don't think that Sanders has any chance of winning the election. People who run outside of party lines don't have a history of doing well. Washington warned against the polarization of politics into two separate parties in his farewell address. Obviously, we are far beyond the point of no return on that one. We are leaning too far left and two far right for a third party candidate to have a chance, at least in this decade. I think it will be an interesting campaign, and though he wishes that he will do more than push Hillary to be more liberal, I think he will actually do a good job of this.
